Have you used a bluetooth headset for your v551?
Have you used the same bluetooth headset linked to a PC for Skype, or some
    other PC mic/speaker application?

I can get WindowsXP to recognize a Motorola HS820, and even set it as the
default audio device through my DLink DBT-120 (using widcom drivers), but I
can't get any audio in or out.

Windows XP Bluetooth doesn't support Headset Profile. Try a different stack.
