I was wondering if the PalmOne units will be able to function without a
subscription? I mean, for example, like a VZW or SPCS one that's not
registered, or a GSM one with an unregistered SIM. I can get my hands
on some pretty cheap, but I was wondering if they would be able to
function just for the PDA portion. I don't see any reason why they
wouldn't, but sometimes you never know.

That would be a waste. Yes, you can use a smartphone as just a PDA,
but why would you want to? If all you need is the PDA, then get just a
PDA. Don't get me wrong, I love my Treo 650. but if I didn't want or
need the cellphone use of it, I wouldn't have gotten it. I'd have
gotten something else instead, maybe the LifeDrive.

I can get my hands on a couple of the phones really cheap (like $15.00)
branded mainly as Sprint PCS, but I need some PDA's, and figured it'd be
    cheaper than buying regular PDA's.

    Yes.

No problem, and send me the pricing you're getting, for I'm shopping for a
spare. My Tungsten W is getting flaky, and I;'ve beeen spoiled by my GI 650.
    Are they, BTW, carrier subsidy-locked?

I actually bought them from the county, and all were subsidy locked to
Sprint. Both we and the county now use Cingular, so they would be no
use to us as phones, except for the 911 feature. I'm kind of bummed
that weren't enough for me to get one. Oh well, c'est la vie.
