Is there a way to surf the internet using my V551 together with my
laptop(an old thinkpad 600x running XP PRO) or would it be more cost
effective to sign up for their wireless service which would cost me $60
a month for unlimited service because of employee discount. Also, does
anyone know cingular's track record with wireless service compared to
Verizon or even T-Mobile who if I remember correctly offers unlimited
service for $40 a month. Please advise and TIA.

Get your Cingular rep to sign you up for CSD (about $3-4/month). Then
you can use your phone with bluetooth as a modem.

Just remember when you enter your phone number for your ISP, to start
it with a +. That turns on CSD.

    Dial +1-813-111-1111

Yes. (Excellent notebook computer, BTW, arguably the best ever made.)

There's also a current promotion for everyone at the same price.

MEdia Net Unlimited is only $20 per month, and can be used to access the
Internet from either a handset or a "tethered" computer, but "tethered" use is
    now expressly prohibited.

Cingular's wireless data service is very good here in Northern California.
Although there have been a few problems in the past year, it's usually fast
    and otherwise reliable.

Verizon has roughly comparable speed, coverage, and cost.

T-Mobile is cheaper (unlimited data $30/mo without a voice rate plan), but
slower (currently only GPRS) and with less coverage.

    Re: V551 and the internet....

A leading "+" is actually the international dialing code, making the following
"1" in your example a country code (rather than an area code signal, which
isn't needed on Cingular). It's a coincidence that the ("1") USA country code
is the same as the ("1") area code signal.

If "+" were really a CSD signal, then "+8131111111" would work (using the
number in your example), but don't try it, because you'll be calling Japan
    (country code "81")!

All that's needed for a CSD call if you have CSD activated on your account is
to dial "4152441012" (here in Northern California at least). It doesn't hurt
to dial it as "+14152441012", but it's not required.

Is this true for those of us that signed up a year ago? I was even
told by the salesman that it was OK, but I didn't get it in writing.

I think that's something you have to decide for yourself.

Just curious to know why the Thinkpad 600X would arguably be the best
ever made. I am a firm believer that just because something is brand new
or the most expensive that doesn't mean it will be the best product. If
the 600X is a diamond in the rough I would sure like to know. Thanks.

Superb engineering. Rugged and reliable. Thin and light for what it is.
I've got one that's fallen off chart tables in sailboats pounding through
ocean at least three times, and it's never skipped a beat.
