I have a cottage that I almost never use except on weekends; and on weekends
I have essentially free cellular service. So I am thinking about getting
rid of my landline and saving a few $100 a year.

The one sticking point (other than the fact that I occasionally can't get a
signal, but they are supposed to be improving that...) is connecting my
    computer to the internet.

I have a Nokia 6430i, which I think can be used for this purpose, but
neither the instruction book nor the people at Cingular are real clear on
how it would be done. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

The only way to have essentially free data service is to use CSD, which will
need to be enabled on your account as part of a minimum data package ($4/mo
the last time I checked), but be warned that CSD is quite slow, 9600 bps.

    1. Confirm the 6340i has data modem capability. Not all Nokias do. Also, find if
it does GPRS or EDGE, for I find GPRS tops out at 40kbps under storng signal
    conditions.
    2. Discuss the price of a data plan with a Cingular CSR.
    3. Get a monitoring program and see how much you use it, for you willbe charged
2 to 3 cents per kilobyte,
    4. Run the numbers.
    5. If it is cost-effective, get cable from Nokia to PC, configure it as a modem.
    6. If signal strength is inadequate, purchase an external dirfectional antenna &
    point at Cingular's best tower.

For GPRS, also confirm the service class of the device, which affects what
speeds can be attained; e.g., Class 4 devices are slower than Class 10
devices. I regularly get about 50 Kbps with Class 10 GPRS in good signal
    areas.

That's for GPRS. CSD is charged by minutes, making it essentially free on
Nights and Weekends if you have a big surplus of Night and Weekend minutes.

IIRC, the Nokia 6340i has no GPRS or EDGE capability. It does, however,
work on AMPS 800, TDMA 800, TDMA 1900, GSM 850, and GSM 1900.

    John -

I don't think that the CSD is charged that way. I think that you will get
charged at the per minute rate and therefore NW are charged at $0.40.

I can tell you from direct personal experience that CSD calls do use minutes,
and that during Nights and Weekends CSD will use up Night and Weekend minutes
before using anytime minutes. Thus there is no extra cost for CSD until all
your applicable minutes are used up.

So, no worthwhile data service. (CSD is, what, 9600 baud? Fuggedaboudit.)

Sony Ericsson GC82 PC Cards (GPRS/EGPRS/EDGE) have been going on eBay for only
about $30 (shipping included). Downlink speed is typically 150 Kbps in good
signal areas. You could simply switch your SIM back and forth between your
    6340i and the GC82.

That depends on your data option/package, ranging from pay-as-you-go up to
Laptop Connect. Note that "tethering" is now specifically prohibited on MEdia
Net (although there haven't been any reports of this actually being enforced).

In a previous post I mentioned that a Cingular store rep told me I
could swap SIMs between my phone and PC card to get access. Someone
here told me that wouldn't work. I would like to try that route if I
could get Internet service via my MediaNet unlimited account.
