no, this is not porn trolling, and i am of sound mind:
last night as i was falling asleep and the room was dead silent, i heard a
very feint sound from the cell phone (on my desk across the room)--not a
ring and not the vibrate mode for incoming, but even more feint--like a
series of short buzzes mixed with a couple long ones.
i also had the phone sitting near my pc monitor yesterday and noticed the
screen would sort of 'shiver' every so often.
is this cell phone (a samsung 497) about to beam me up to the mothership?!?
anyone else hear something like this before?
thanks in advance.

Memory compaction/garbage collection? My old Zenith ZP-150 RAM based
80's vintage DOS laptop used to do that.

Re: wierd vibrations
Do you have a clock radio in the room? What you heard is most likely the
phone transmitting. I have noticed that the new GSM phones like to make
strange noises come from other electronic equipment. My old V60 did it too
but not to the extent as my V551. It is normal and there is nothing to
worry about. If it bothers you then try relocating the phone away from
other devices. Try putting a V551 next to the siren in an ambulance...
What a racket...

I used to have a real old Ericsson with omnipoint/voicetream/tmobile
as my provider. About three to five seconds before my phone would
ring, I would hear this strange beeping coming from my computer
speakers. This happened whenever the phone was in the room, but once
outside the room, it wouldn't do the speaker thing. The only thing I
could think, which may be totally wrong, was that a signal was getting
sent to my phone to see if it was on and my phone was replying saying
that yes it was on and the reply signal was getting sent back through
my speakers...Strange indeed..lol

Somewhere around Sun, 16 Oct 2005 19:10:46 GMT, while reading

That's probably close. A cow-orker of mine keeps his phone (Nokia GSM)
under his monitor, and it gets interference right before it rings.

Lemme guess... "bz! bz! bz! bz! bzzzzzbzzzzbzzzzzzbzzzzzbzzzzbzz!"

No, but it IS trying to "phone home." Your Samsung, being a GSM phone,
transmits using bursts of data sent in prearranged time slots. While
this is a relatively efficient way of communicating, the rapid
on-and-off of the phone's transmitter has a nasty side effect of
interfering with unshielded electronics. The result is that stereo
speakers and radios might buzz similar to what you heard, and monitor
displays can jitter if near a transmitting GSM phone.
Keep in in mind that you don't HAVE to be on the phone in order for it
to transmit. A cell phone has to periodically "check in" with the
network to register its location. Also, any time you receive a
voicemail or SMS, the phone has to transmit to acknowledge receipt.
Nextel phones are worse. They use a slightly different air interface,
but based on the same principle. And the intereference they cause
sounds like a VERY LOUD lawn sprinkler. :P
