My friend's v551 displays an E on his phone, mine does not. Will Cingular provide
me with a firmware upgrade or give me the run-around?

Re: v551 edge
My v551 displays neither a G or an E when GPRS is active on Cingular.

The firmware upgrades come from Motorola, not Cingular.

Cingular does not provide firmware updates.
If the phone is under warranty you can send it to Motorola and have it
flashed. The details, and submission form, are on their web site.
Or, you can do it yourself.

Re: v551 edge
The function of displaying the E for EDGE service is usually controlled by
the FLEX file, not the phone's firmware.
However when the V551 first came out, it had EDGE but not the capability to
display the E. If newer models are showing it, then it can be a combination
of both Firmware and FLEX, so both will be needed.
Also, the SIM card provisioning, can enable/disable this too.
Suggest you swap your friend's SIM card that shows E in the other phone and
put it in your phone. Then you will determine if it's SIM card provisioning
or Firmware, FLEX file enabled.
You can compare Firmware and FLEX files by entering *#9999#, assuming both
phones are the same.
