Hello. I have my LG C2000 GPRS phone tethered via MediaNet to my WinXP
laptop. Whenever I try logging in using my dialup networking icon or
the Cingular Connection Manager, I get to the authentication portion
that says: "Verifying Username and Password" but it times out from
there indicating that the "remote computer did not respond in a timely
    manner."

It may also be worth noting that when I select the "Query Modem" in
the modem's Properties screen, it takes about 6 minutes for the
"success" to show up. Perhaps I need to increase my modem's timeout?
If so, how? Any clues on resolving these issues will be greatly
    appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Query Modem should only take a few seconds; e.g., less than 10 seconds in the
case of my Motorola V551 over Bluetooth. You need to fix this problem.

I had similar problems with my LG C1300 tethered. Would either get the
"remote computer did not respond in a timely
manner", or, "TCP/IP error". Tried using Windows dialer, LG connection
    manager, and Cingular Connection manager.
Bought a GC82 card on ebay and it works fine. I don't know if it is
something in the LG interface, or, just something I was doing
    incorrectly.

Thanks, that's exactly what I did. I paid about $33. for a used Sony
Ericsson GC82 and was able to get access using that card. However, it
is painfully slow (averages <15 kbps) and intermittent, even with the
optional antenna I bought for it. Still, I'd like to get the data
cable working because it's so inconvenient having to swap out my SIM
card each time I want to get access with the PC Card. I wish I knew of
    a place that cloned SIMs.

Gee!, I get much faster than that. Are you using the Sony connection
    manager?
I agree, that the tether would be preferable to swapping SIM's. I'm sure
    you will find
someone who can clone a SIM. I always been afraid that they would make
    multiple copies.
Should you ever solve this bug, please post the fix. I suspect, on my C1300
that it does not like the
    USB Serial swap.

Sounds like you are only getting GPRS connections, not EGPRS(EDGE)
    connections.

I speed ranges from 0 to 56 kbps, must mostly on the lower end. I get
the same results whether using the Cingular Connection Manager or the
Sony Connection Manager. Perhaps I'm just located in a low signal area
of the city (many brick homes and apartments surround me).

I see speeds of around 30KbpS in a poor reception area that is GPRS-only,
no EDGE. The best I've seen is 97KbpS, with EDGE and good signal.
My Motorola v551 shows a different icon when EDGE is available.

Do you know how to verify which connection you've made?
The modem logs from Mobile Phone Tools show "GPRS attached: YES", even when
I know from the icon on the phone, and the connection speed, that I have
EDGE. Is there an indication of how many slots you have? I see changes in
speed that seem to be very large, 19.2K steps seems plausible.

Depends on the device, and many devices don't distinguish/report.

    >The modem logs from Mobile Phone Tools show "GPRS attached: YES", even when

    That's typical.

I don't know of any devices that report the current number of time slots.

That's about the best you'll get with an EGPRS(EDGE) Class 4 device like the
    V551.

Higher download speed is possible with Classes 8, 10, 11, and 12, about 150
Kbps with good device and signal.

I assumed I was always getting EDGE connections since I am using the
Sony Ericsson GC82 EDGE PC card (along with my SIM) to connect to the
    Internet.

At my house, there is no EDGE signal, only GPRS. If it weren't for the
icon on the telephone, I wouldn't know that.

Like all other EGPRS/EDGE devices, the GC82 silently falls back to standard
    GPRS when EGPRS(EDGE) isn't available.
