Re: Opinion on Cingular?
Long rant alert.
I had 2 choices, was with Verizon. Both Cingular and Verizon were the only
ones with good reception after '04 '05 hurricanes here in S. FL. Verizon
offers better phones on thier cheapest plans, whereas Cingular offers the
cheapest phones on thier cheapest plans.
Everyone at work has Verizon and they are happy with both the phone they
originally received and the service. Me and my family are all on the
Cingular Family plan and are lackadaisacal about thier lackluster
performance both on the cheapo bottom of the line LG and Samsung handsets
they gave us and the sorry customer / tech support and bad reception /
service. Cingular has been blaming everything down here on the hurricane
damage, Im suprised that they dont start using "911" lol. Customer service
is inept I have had 4 samsung x427 handsets replaced in 8 months because
they were ill informed about headset compatability and blamed the problem on
the phone. Last week, my wife went out of state and was without service
because of network settings, it took me 3 days of phone calls to convince
techsup that the problem was thiers. I am a former (long ago) ATTWS tech and
hate being treated like an idiot by idiots. Every techsup call is a hassle
and time consuming. Thats why I found this NG to find nice ppl who know what
they are talking about and give a sh*t about helping others. When I call
Cingular Techsup I feel like i am dealing with Lilly Tomlin.
At work, we are eligible for a corporate discount for Verizon, the guys are
very happy and were given free camera phones on a basic plan with no
problems.
Other than that, they are fine, lol.

Re: Opinion on Cingular?
I live in Wash DC. Other than the fact that they don't work underground
on the Metro, I've been happy. My mother has Cingular and was
travelling in a remote area of Colorado/Utah. She had no coverage while
her Verizon companions did. Other than that, no problems.
I am travelling to Latin America, and am glad that I have a compatible,
unlocked GSM phone to use down there, whereas with Verizon, I don't
think that would be the case.

Per Emylno:

Rightly or wrongly: best coverage, poor customer service.

Poor coverage in many areas, but rollover is nice. I.e., for my testing
purposes, I always carry three phones. The Cingular GSM phone
consistently has the poorest coverage. Now part of this may be due to
the fact that most of my testing is in the San Francisco Bay Area, where
Cingular has never been great, though the AT&T acquisition has improved
things a lot.
However I also have done testing in other states. I.e., last year I was
in Maryland, and took the Washington Metro into D.C.. The Verizon phone
worked fine on the underground parts of the Metro, the Cingular did not
work at all. In Alaska, GSM coverage is in its infancy, when I went
there two years ago, there wasn't any.
What most people believe is that Cingular has potential, but their
network is still solidly in third place in terms of coverage. Look at
all the surveys, they say the same thing.

Been with them since 95 and have never had a reason to shop for another

Customer service, rate plans, types of phones are all secondary to if
your phone works where you most need it. Having the coolest phone, 200
gadzillion day time minutes...isn't going to do you much good if you
can't place or receive calls.
Given all the carriers you are looking at, there's really not much
difference in basic functionality and pricing. Make the coverage area
requirements your starting point, and then look at the secondary
compelling features you need.

Re: Opinion on Cingular?
I started with ATT TDMA, moved to their GSM and now Cingular GSM. I have
to say I've never been particularly happy with GSM. There's frequent
dropouts even when neither party is moving. (Can you here me now?... Can
you repeat that?) I can often just watch the signal strength vary by 2 bars.
I've since changed jobs and get almost zero coverage in or out of the
building I work. But I see plenty of other people at work whose other
carrier phones work fine inside. I can't wait until my contract is up.

In fact Cingular now has arguably the best digital network in the USA.
>Look at
>all the surveys, they say the same thing.
The surveys aren't terribly meaningful because they don't distinguish between
such things as TDMA and GSM, and subscribers with and without ENS.

Check out the most recent Consumer Reports.....depending on your area,
you might be better off with someone else than Cingular. In Chicago, US
Cellular and Verizon came out on top. Forget all the
features...reception, lack of dropped calls voice quality are the things
that count.

I switched from Sprint to Cingular last week and so far have been pleased.
CS in the store and by phone has been quick and helpful and tech support was
fine when I called about a question on the BB8700c. So far signal has
seemed stronger than Sprint but I have only been in Atlanta and Dallas.
I'll be in Philly and New York in the next few days so will test the NE
coverage.

Re: Opinion on Cingular?
I would argue...
Best digital network=Verizon (1xrtt and EVDO blows away gprs and EDGE)
Best network for sharing a family plan (and rollover)=Cingular.
Also have been through three hurricanes over 2 years with long power outages
lasting more than a week Verizon up 80% of the time, Cingular up 30% of the
time.
NYC/Northeast 2003 blackout, Cingular useable 10% of the time, Verizon 50%
usable in Manhattan.
In emergencies, Verizon has superior battery backup and/or generators.
On other hand, 1xrtt doesn't roam everywhere and EVDO is in some major
cities,
I am not necessarily pro Verizon as I pay for 4 phones on Cingular but
having the opportunity to use Verizon for other things too, if they stopped
dumbing down phones (Bluetooth) and had better rate plans, I'd have more
phones on Verizon.
(and don't bother to tell me about orange/blue/ens as I've been in the
business and clearly understand that from the inside).
