Re: EDGE Technology & PC Cards

I have the Sony Ericsson GC82 air card that is unlocked an have used it
on the AT&T side (with a blue SIM) and now on the Cingular side (with
an Orange SIM) On the Orange side it's about 4-5 times faster than
dial up here in Central PA. On the Blue side it was only about 2-3
times faster than dial up. I've also used my Motorola V551 tethered
via a USB cable and I've gotten good results as well. With the PC card
having the latest communication manager software from Cingular seems to
help hold the signal and have increased the speed. I have the settings
set to enhanced which cuts down on the graphic quality but helps in the
overall speed. I'm waiting for UMTS to launch in this market.
    (hopefully soon!)

About the same when I'm Bluetoothed into the V557 with EDGE.

    Which same? v551 == v557?
The v551 is EDGE class 4, the v557 is EDGE class 6, so there could be some
difference in upload speed, but I find up and down to be the same in many
    cases.

Have the V557. Speeds range from 58K to 85K download speeds using

See "What data speeds are possible with Cingular (GSM)?" in the FAQ (link
below). PC Cards can achieve Class 10 speeds.

edge will supply 50 to 60 k at best.

    if available...

if you want cheap data go tmobile all you can eat Edge @ 29.99

if you want reliable go Verizon and EVDO..will blow smoke up to 5meg
    FTP

if you love pain.. eat an orange and use the cingular solution.

79.99 unlimited data on a cheap network card,

or pay for a UMTS card that works.. in a whooping 10 cities.

I wish I could aford it. I would love Verizon wireless acces, but won't be
shelling out the cash for it. The 150k average I get form EDGE is plenty for
my ppc. It would be nice to have the faster speeds when tethering to my
laptop, but that is rare and certainly not worth the cost of Verizon.

Painless for me <wink>. It's starting to look like I am feeding a troll 8-)

I prefer my 19.99/month which includes unlimited data, and more than enough
SMS and MMS with no additional equipment cost (just use the phone).
