Present phone with Cingular -> Motorola V551 - if I buy an unlocked Motorola pink Razr phone will everything be ok when I just insert my sim card? Will the Internet work - and text messaging, etc. just like it did before? Just wondering.

Should work fine-you will just have to go to Cingular website or
Nokiausa.com and have internet/sms settings texted to your phone-usually
the basic ones are enough, as the advanced ones will duplicate the basic
    settings...

I think, normally, that you need to have a phone, or version of the phone,
that works with Cingular. Or have the ability to program the firmware.

I don't know the Motorola phones specifically, so I can't give any real
details, but maybe this will help you think about issues you may not be
aware of, so you can look into it.

For example, I have an older Samsung x426 unlocked phone (AT&T version), and
it more or less works (messaging and voice), but there appears to be no way
the internet browsing will work. It just doesn't have all the right
settings exposed, so even though I know all the settings that are needed,
there's no way to set them.

There is a known issue in the northeast with the x426 and internet
accessibility. Cingular towers can't talk to that specific phone. I went
around 4 months while still under AT&T and all of a sudden my internet went
away. Turns out they disconnected/converted the ATT tower I was using and
poof my internet stopped. They ended up converting me to Cingular free and
replacing all my phones free, but it too ALOT of calls and arguments.

Thanks for that info. I got the phone free from a friend that previously
had AT&T, but was no longer using the phone. Since my phone was had an
intermittant keyboard problem, I had the 426 unlocked fairly cheaply, and I
use it. I don't really use the internet from the phone anyway, so it's not
a big deal for me that it doesn't work.

Thanks, but like I said, I know the settings... but the phone doesn't
support those settings, it supports nMode.

For example, there is no setting for Port, so I can't enter a port number.
Some of the other settings may be either not present, or may not have the
    right choices.

But it saves me money, as I can't download ringtones, and I don't need to
pay for the service. :-) But ringtones can be transferred via USB cable
from my computer, so that's not a problem, anyway.

My unlocked AT&T Nokia 6620 works fine with everything. Internet,
Medianet,messaging-just delete all old access points, and have the new
ones sent via text from either Nokia or Cingular website-only takes a
    minute or two-very simple...

    Re: Switching Sim Cards ?

Try this link it will help configure for Cingular or AT&T Wirless
    (MEdia Net or mMode)

    https://onlinecare.cingular.com/device-support/index.do

Also for the RAZR settings you will need to set up the MMS settings
when setting up the MEdia Net browser settings as above. Go to the
link I listed here and it will give you the MMS settings and explain
Step by Step how to configure the MMS so you can send and recieve
pictures. If you do not change the settings in the Messaging menu you
will NOT be able to send or recieve pics.

Thanks, I've been to that site, and even posted a message asking about it
(never got any replies). The first step asks me to select my model, and
    it's not in the list.

If I select the 427m instead, which is the Cingular version, the settings
are different, and don't match the settings I have available.

Cingular never sold the 426, just the 427, so I wouldn't really expect
    everything to work.

In a few more weeks, I will be completely contract free for my three
accounts in my family plan. I'll talk to them, and see if I can get a
better deal than what they offer online to continue with Cingular.
Otherwise, I may just make do with what I have for a while.

But, did Cingular sell the Nokia 6620? They never sold my phone, so maybe
    that could be the difference.
