I just got a Samsung x497 and I'd like to get some MP3 ringtones
downloaded. I don't need to do any synchronization of address book,
    ToDos, etc.

If I buy *only* a data cable without the software package (lots of
cables only for sale on eBay) can I do basic file transfers? Or does
the cable require some sort of additional software?

    Thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys (as I haven't done this myself). You just
go to the website, choose your ringtone and purchase it, then Cingular
sends it to your phone automatically. No cable or phone-to-computer
    connection needed.

Re: Samsung x497 - Software Required With Data Cable?

AFAIK, according to users on mobeledia.com, you should be able to use the
proper cable with the Samsung PC Studio software, which you can DL from
Samsung.com. Yes, you will need some kind of data transfer software, but its
    free!

a little ot, but - Please read my post about my experience purchasing a
cable from ebay, the primary seller for this cable/kit (darn near impossible
to find a cable alone) is cellularoasis, beware of them! (fortunately, after
they ripped me off, paypay reimbursed me).

Supposedly, Cingular vendors should be getting a USB version (cable alone)
in stores soon I am told.

    Somewhere around 12 Jan 2006 03:36:21 -0800, while reading

Let's see, with my phone, I can connect the cable, and transfer any files I
own from my PC to my phone to use as a ringtone, including custom ones I
    might make myself.

Or, I can overpay Cingular or some other vendor and get some hokey ringtone
that may or may not sound decent (probably not).

I think I'd rather buy the cable. And, with the cable, you can backup or
edit your address book, and possibly sync to Outlook, if you use it.

    Makes sense Marty. :-)

I just wasn't sure that the carriers had not crippled the phone to
prevent this. I had read somewhere where they crippled the phone to
prevent this with bluetooth. But like I said, I haven't done this
    myself.

I'm not sure if they might be doing that now. I can see where they wouldn't
want bluetooth phones exchanging ringtones to easily. Hopefully, they
wouldn't disable phone to computer transfers, though. What if a user wants
to make his own, say spoken phrases like "Sam, this is your phone; answer
    me!" or something? :-)

If you guys do sucessfully purchase a x497 cable online, please tell where
you got it. I have been calling all over town, every Cingular vendor says
the cable is new and they dont have it in stock yet.

Try getting a part number from your manual, Samsung, or Cingular. Then
you can Google the part number, try it in www.pricegrabber.com , and on
e-bay. You may find a seller of this cable.

Re: Samsung x497 - Software Required With Data Cable?

Wouldnt it be cheaper to just BUY a Bluetooth adapter for your computer
and use the Bluetooth connection built into the phone? Why use cables
when you have Bluetooth in the phone? And the Bluetooth USB adapters
are cheap as heck at CompUSA. Probly around 12 or 15 bucks.

I have used BT (Bluetooth Successfully with Moto V600 and 551) dont see
where Samsung would be any different

Except the fact that the Samsung X497 does not have bluetooth might be
a problem if you're tryiing to sync it with a bluetooth computer.

Not sure about that. ioGear is over $70 and the D-Link DBT-120 is $39 at
Office Max and Office Deport. The data cable from www.gomatic.com is
    only $15

Re: Samsung x497 - Software Required With Data Cable?

I'm the newest member of the "You get what you pay for." club. I
bought an X497 holster and data cable combo off of eBay. $10 including
shipping. Even if it wasn't a total bust I'd have a holster for $10.

The second time I took the phone out of the holster the little plastic
thingy that grabs onto the top of the phone breaks off. Holster
    totally useless.

USB data cable comes shipped with driver CD. That in itself was very
encouraging. Driver installs. Reboot. I plug in phone:
Nothing.......so "nothing" the phone is locked up and I have to remove
    the battery to reset.

Has ANYONE EVER gotten an x497 to work with ANY data cable?

    Thanks.

    Jim

While this site is not in english and it's doesn't list the X497
specifically you could try downloading one of these programs

    http://www.samtel.ch/main/d/support/...ds/#easystudio

Or you can pony up some money and buy the Easy Studio software direct
from Samsung's website. However they do not provide an option to
    download from their website.

    Product ID: PKT133LBEG/STD - $63.99 each
