Sometimes I get a voice mail that's funny or poinient and I'd like to save
it. I could
just play it on the speaker-phone into a microphone to my comptuer (into a
WAV file)
but the recording is pretty weak and crappy after all that. Are there any
other good
and not costly ways to get a voice-mail saved?
I have a Motorola V180 phone, though I suppose I could call voice mail from
any other phone if that would help.
Thanks,
Gary

Get a audio cable and adapter from Raio Shack. The phone's earpiece jack
is "stereo" left channel for microphone audio and right channel for
earpiece audio.
Ask for a cable that has a stereo mini-plug on one end and a
stereo-to-mono (TWO plugs) adapter. One of the plugs will have the audio
you want and plug it into your computer's sound card mic jack. Adjust
the audio accordingly.

Hey, thanks.
Funny, I never even noticed the audio-plug on my phone. I'm just not
a person that uses the phone enough to bother with a headset, and so
it never occured to me. I think I even have one of those cables down
in the basement.
Many thanks.

You can use the Windows Sound Recorder to record the audio. If you can't
find it in your Programs Files - -
Start - Run - sndrec32.exe [Enter]
While you're at it, do a Search for that app and make a shortcut on yer
Desktop.

Maybe someday Cingular will install the Internet access component and
allow you to logon to mycingular and listen and save your VM online.
They appear to be using an Octel 350 system (here anyway) and I know
that component has been available for some time. That's one of the
reasons I use a 3rd party one-number service--I can listen, delete,
save, and offload voice mail (and fax) messages to the pc.

How much does that serice cost? Probably not intersted at the moment,
but maybe at some point. Yea, surprising Cingular and others don't offer
this
even as an added pay option.

There are several available. I used uReach.com for awhile. It runs
about $15/mo PLUS a per minute charge when you go over so many--think
it's 30 minutes now. That's for a 800# that forwards to any phone (or
phones one by one). I later switched to SmartNumber by Accessline.com
where I could get a LOCAL Dallas/Ft Worth Metro number with unlimited
inbound/outbound metro calling for a flat monthly rate (DFW is one of
the places with different classes of numbers--some can call/be called by
all numbers in the metroplex and others cannot--the AL numbers are the
kind that can). I think that's now $19/mo (yep but it isn't unlimited
any more--1500 inbound minutes with unlimited outbound) BUT if you have
a CostCo Executive account you can get it for $15. I've been pleased
with it--the forwarding choices are *very* flexible.

Re: Any way to save a voice mail message to something permanent / a computer?
If you use a VoIP service like Vonage or Sunrocket you could change
your forwarding number in your Cellular phone to your VoIP number where
the person who is calling you will be leaving a message on your VoIP
voice mail service. These 2 services will convert the message to a WAV
file and you can save it, or forward it as you wish. Or you can try
the service CallWave which is meant more for users on Dial up internet
access. I've posted all 3 links below.
I have Sunrocket service and have the signature line where it's a
virtual number and have it set to go right to Voice mail after 1 ring.
Just note that you will not get a notification on your phone that you
have a message waiting unless you set up the VoIP service to notify you
when you have a message. You can also configure your Voice Mail box
number on your Cellular phone to dial to your VoIP service or just
create a speeed dial in your phone book.
To change your forwarding number go to the Messaging menu of your cell
phone, then to the Voice mail setup, then change forwarding number to
your VoIP number or other Voice mail service like Callwave.
