    I have been using my cingular service for about a year with both my
    laptop and pocketpc. I am using the unlimited $20/MO. medianet plan.
    It has worked fine except for a few instances for the last year but now
    the last week it hasn't worked. Has cingular changed anything so that
    this can no longer be done? If not, what are my other options for
    tethering (standard EDGE speed, not the new faster speeds?)

    Appears so...will post the full scoop later tonight, STR8 from a
    Cingular NOC manager.

    Still working fine for me here in Northern California using the old MEdia
    Works Unlimited package.

    According to a fellow IT'er with Cingular, they started flagging
    accounts last week with over 200 MB per month downloads. The "virtual
    password" gets disabled. *Virtual* in that all users use the same
    CINGULAR! password to log in, but actual authentication is based on your
    phone's profile. They will get the RAS Error 31.

    Customer service is having those customers add the unlimited data
    connect plan to their voice plan for $59 per month (normally its $79).

    Several other local users reported the same password error, but used
    less than 10 MB per month. This would appear that tethering can indeed
    be monitored and might prevent it from here on out. Just an
    observation...no factual information to support it.

    My "unlimited MediaNET" got dropped Saturday morning (300 MB last month)
    along with some other ones up here. CS said my unlimited MediaNET
    (specifically for tethering) was coded differently than the other
    MediaNET (non-tethered handset use only) users up here and she got me
    back online within minutes...but other users with less than 10 MB per
    month had go with a data connect plan.

    It looks like Cingular is simply going to force heavy tethering users to
    a data plan instead of hitting them with a monster bill for their
    prohibited tethering. This avoids the complications of users complaining
    a Cingular store (perhaps a franchise) that sold them a data cable with
    their phone, but failed to point out is was prohibited.

    This sounds to me like Yet Another Internet Legend that I'm not going to take
    seriously unless and until I see some credible proof. My own usage has gone
    well over 200 MB, and my V551 phone alone can easily exceed that amount --
    I'll often burn up more than 25 MB in a day with WAP, Google Local for Mobile,
    and Opera Mini for web and email -- after all, that's less than 45 mins of
    transfer time.

    Actual authentication is by SIM, not the phone. You can move the SIM from
    phone to phone, and the data package goes with it.

    I'm sorry- we needs facts here and not your unsubstantiated stories. That
    is what you tell everybody that relays their own personal experiences, isn't
    it?

    OK, wanna git picky, cowboy? The phone does the authentication based on
    the profile (data, information, etc.) contained in the SIM, ergo...the
    phone does the....oh, nevermind.

    In the phone. The SIM isn't phone specific. My own SIM works just as well in
    my Sony Ericsson GC82 as it does in my Motorola V551. That's because there's
    nothing phone-specific in the SIM.

    Network registration is based on the identity stored in the SIM, called the
    International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI). The phone is irrelevant.

    Data service authentication is likewise based on the SIM. Information
    configured into the phone (userid, password, APN) is the same for all
    subscribers.

    All the phones does is transmit that information to the network.

    Stick your SIM where the sun don't shine and see if you get connected.

    Perhaps I should have used the phrase "phone/SIM combo". Would that have
    made you happy. In the CONTEXT of what *I* said, I was correct.
