I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I've got four phones. Two are the original phones from 7/04, and the
other two were upgraded last week. Text messaging is enabled on all.

The SMS code on all four is +13123149810. I've never set this, so I
assume it comes over the air, and is dependent on locale.

The problem is that the upgraded phones will not send or receive text
messages, but the original ones will. In a live chat with Cingular, I
was told to be sure that +13123149810 was the SMS number I was using.
Yes, it is. They told me to be sure that text messaging was enabled.
    Yes, it is.

This morning I called Cingular. They told me +13123149810 was for the
mid-West, and they didn't know why it worked in the original two phones,
and that the proper SMS number is +12099042010. I will not have access
to the two new phones until later tonight to try this code, but I did try
it in one of the original phones, and it works. So, the original phone
(s?) can use either SMC number.

    My questions are:
    1) Isn't the SMS number received over the air when a phone is reset or
    powered on?
    2) What is the proper SMS code for the San Francisco Bay Area?
    3) Is the SMS number just another phone number? If so, any should work,
but I guess there are many to service different markets and to balance
    the load. Yes?

    Thanks

Ask Customer Care to be sure that Text Messaging is enabled on your account,
and to have settings pushed to your phone.

When "settings" are "pushed" by Cingular to the phone, not at other times.

    +13123149810

The Service Center Number (SCN) you have programmed is the default SCN for
the entire US. There are regional SCN's that can be programmed into each
device to bypass the default (that I think is having issues right now)

I know you can try the same # you have except change the 10 to 70 at the end
of the number or call customer care and ask them for one on the left coast.

No - it is a number specific which messages pass through in order to be
relayed properly. It is not just another number.

    Thanks, John.

It turns out that all settings were correct, but that the only way to get
the text messaging to work was to call Cingular and have them 'push' the
profile to the phones. They didn't why this was so, but that fixed the
    problem.

The probably means that (a) the settings weren't actually correct or (b) the
account wasn't provisioned properly, which is automatically fixed when
    settings are "pushed".
