Can someone tell me how the phone upgrades work for a family plan... I know
they got our plan holder to sign up for 2 more years to upgrade her phone
last year. So what about the rest of us? Are they gonna keep tacking on 2
years for every family member's phone we upgrade???

Why not call Customer Care and ask?

No, but the main plan holder will need to stay until the end of all the
other members, obviously. If you have 2 extra lines, and one contract
expires, that person can leave. If that person gets a new subsidized phone,
then the contract for that person is extended, as is the plan holder, but
not the other members.

Yes, they will add 2 years to any phone that upgrades. If the primary
phone doesn't upgrade, but a secondary one does, the primary one will
have to stay for another 2 years to keep the secondary one going.
I had 4 phones on a 1 year family plan, purchased from Best Buy in July
2004. In July of 2005, we all became eligible for upgrades, but no one
needed one, as we were all happy with our phones. Last month, a
secondary phone went dead, so we upgraded it and had to sign up for 2
years. I hated to do that, but changing providers may have been like
jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. Since the primary phone
now had to stay subscribed for another 2 years, we decided to upgrade all
phones, so that the two year clock would start running now, rather than
wait for another phone to go dead, and start the clock running at some
later date. In addition, we now have three 'extra' phones that work,
should any of the new ones break or get lost.

= sold to you at a discounted (subsidized) price. You can avoid the extension
by (a) paying full price or (b) getting your "upgrade" someplace else.

I often find that the price someplace else is more attractive than the
subsidized price, all things considered. I'm thinking of buying a Motorola
V360 (quad band version), and if I do, I'll almost certainly buy it on eBay.
(The only thing stopping me is that I'd rather have a handset with support for
UMTS/HSDPA.)
