Cingular will sell me a Samsung 427 triband phone but flatly refuses to
unlock it. Thus, if I take it to Britain, my British SIM card (Virgin
    Mobile) still will not work.

Is there somewhere around Atlanta (or, even better, Athens, Ga.) where I
    could get it unlocked?

If Samsung doesn't work out, look into Nokia - which you may be able to unlock
    yourself.

I can't find the URL at the moment, but I've been able to unlock a half-dozen
Nokias by keying their SNs into a web page - which returns an unlock code.

Nokia 3595, for sure... done two of them.

    Thanks.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's silly that Cingular expects
to sell "world phones" while refusing to unlock them. I suppose there is
some Cingular roaming service in some other countries, but...

Bought a Motorola V557 Quad Band from Cingular about a month ago.

Called their business line and requested the unlock code. Received an
email about a week later with instructions. Unlocked it without any
problems. The week delay was apparently their internal requirement as
to whether my request had a legitimate business need and to check to
see if my account was in good standing for at least 6 months.

    Useful data point.

But I'm not going to buy the phone from them unless I'm *sure* they will
unlock it. No point spending the money for a world phone if I can't use it
    around the world.

    my own nokia 3505)

Excellent! I just tried it and unlocked my (British, GSM 1800) Nokia 3310
on the first try. There is one other precaution, which is that you
shouldn't pause very long while typing the code, or the phone will cancel
the unlocking process on you. But when I typed fast enough, it worked fine.

Is there anything like this for Samsung? I'd rather have all my family's
phones be the same brand in order to share chargers.

If not, I'd go with Nokia because their chargers have been standard seemingly
since Day 1. I've got old TDMA phone chargers that work on my 3595.

Yes, but does Nokia make a compact charger that takes both 120V and 240V
    input?

    Re: Unlocking

I got the word from Cingular today. For some purposes, such as
international travel, they will unlock a phone if you've had it at least 90
days. That won't do me any good because I need to buy a phone and go to
England within about six weeks. They said they could *request* approval to
unlock it, but nobody was able to actually *grant* such approval on the
spot. So they lost the sale and I ordered an unlocked phone from an eBay
    vendor.

I just had my Razor V3 unlocked by
    www.TheTravelInsider.Info
I have high praise for them.
They charged me $25 and tested the phone with domestic anf foreign
    SIMs
It was/is a Tmobile phone, they tested it with Cingular and a sim from
    Morocco.
I do not work for them, I do not get any kind of referal benefit or
    fee.
I just think they are a good vender
