Hi. I am a cingular customer and am using an AT&T (Blue) sim card. I had a
Siemens SX56 but am now using a Nokia 6800 - both seemed to work fine on the
Cingular network with my at&t sim card.

If I buy a Cingular 8125 from ebay, locked OR unlocked, would either work
the same? Anything I need to look out for?

Could anything happen that would make my at&t sim card unusable? I am
worried that if something happens to it then I will be forced to upgrade to
    a cingular plan.

done that several times and it works. Just call tech support and give them
the info on the new phone IMEI number and such. Don't let anyone bull****
you about it either, as some will try. The new phone should make and rec.
calls as soon as you put the sim in though. Picture messaging and such is
why you'll need to have the change your info to the new phone.

Somewhere around Sun, 19 Mar 2006 21:07:46 GMT, while reading

If it is locked to Cingular, I am pretty sure it won't work with the AT&T
sime card. Unlocked will work. I never had an AT&T sim, but I got two AT&T
phones and they wouldn't work with my Cingular sims until I had them
unlocked (I paid 15 or 20 dollars to have them unlocked).

Anything can happen, but it would be pretty abnormal. If the phone has a
password or something, you don't want to mess around trying to guess it,
although that may only be something that the sim card would have.

The blue ATT sim will not work in a phone locked to orange Cingular.
You will need an unlocked phone.

    I have 3 phones here that say you're wrong. 2 V400s and a V220 all locked to
and branded cingular with ATT sims in them.

Then that's something new because orange SIMs sure didn't work
in my SE T616 or my wife's Samsung X427 when we switched
from AT&T to Cingular last year. It was the first thing I tried because
the wife wanted to continue to use her old phone until she had a
chance to put all her entries into the RAZR she got when I swapped
    over.

Incidentally I also tried again in my T616 when my Nokia 6620 from
Cingular crapped out and I had to send it back to Nokia for repair
(which took just over one month).

With all due respect, that's not possible. Your phones may actually be
unlocked -- some have been sold that way.

Well with the same respect, ( and I know you're the expert here) the v400s
came from cingular and the v220 I bought from a friend who left cingular.
None are unlocked. This is what a couple people at cingular tech support
tried to tell me but they were wrong. All of these phones make and rec
calls, send and rec text and MMS. So I dunno, like to have someone else do
it and report. I could send you pics or something if that would do any
good..... Is there a chance cingular at one time sold unlocked phones??
Also when I looked up the FAQs on how to set the phones under "former ATT
customers" the v400 is not even listed...... Yet under cingular it is. I
    dunno John. Go figure.

What they told you is correct -- when a phone is locked to Cingular, then it
will only work with Cingular ("orange") SIMs. This is true of any GSM phone
    and any carrier.

    >All of these phones make and rec

Any phone that works with an ATTWS ("blue") SIM is either (a) locked to ATTWS
    or (b) unlocked.

You could test it with a T-Mobile SIM. If it works with a T-Mobile SIM, then
it's definitely unlocked. If not, then it's an incredible anomoly.

    Thanks for the replies ...

OK: so is the sure-bet the fact than an at&t sim needs an at&t phone and a
cingular sim needs a cingular phone - unless they are unlocked? But, the
at&t sim will default to the cingular network? So, to use my at&t sim, I
need to get an unlocked phone and I'll be set. Also, is it possible to get
an used/additional at&t sim - in order to help prolong my ability to stay
with my at&t plan? I am worried that if something happened to my sim then I
would be forced to go with a cingular plan.

Well T Mobile does not work out here in the boonies at all so I don't know
anyone that has one. Bummer...... Is there a handy way other than that to
tell if a v400 is unlocked? It ONLY has cingular settings in it.

If it works with both "blue" (ATTWS) and "orange" (Cingular) SIMs, then it's
    unlocked.

The other way around: An unlocked phone will work with any compatible SIM.
A locked phone will only work with a SIM for the carrier to which it is
    locked.

    >But, the
    >at&t sim will default to the cingular network?

No, an ATTWS ("blue") SIM will always be "homed" to the "blue" (old ATTWS)
network, although it will also roam freely on the "orange" (Cingular) network
where there isn't a usable "blue" signal.

    >So, to use my at&t sim, I
    >need to get an unlocked phone and I'll be set.

Correct, or a phone locked to ATTWS.

    >Also, is it possible to get

You can indeed buy an unactivated ATTWS SIM (e.g., on eBay), but Cingular
might still refuse to activate it.

Yep, a quick google search pulls up several threads from this newsgroup
indicating that all Cingular "World Phones" (including the v400) were
    sold unlocked by Cingular.
