Can I purchase a prepaid phone and use it on my existing GSM plan by
    inserting my SIM?

I asked a Cingular rep at a company owned retail store and was told that
Prepaid phones will only work with Prepaid SIM's . Is this true, or did she
simply want me to upgrade, thereby locking me into another two year
    contract?

It's possible for them to lock the phone to a particular type of SIM,
whether or not they did this is another question. You might have to get
the phone unlocked in order to do this, so be sure that whatever prepaid
phone you buy is able to be unlocked.

As an aside, I did buy a prepaid Verizon phone and activated it on my
regular account. It actually cost me more than just getting a phone with
a contract, but I may have to switch carriers, and didn't want to get
locked into a two year contract.
