Problems Recognizing RAZR V3 from Motorola Phone Tools

I have a Motorola RAZR V3 that I just purchased from Cingular, and I am not
able to get it recognized by Motorola Phone Tools 4.04. The Motorola
software setup gets to the point where you plug in the special cable to the
phone, and then to the computer. Instantly after plugging in the USB cable
to the computer, the Motorola setup goes off and starts to go through its
phone recognition procedure. This ultimately times out and you get a
message saying the phone is not recognized.

Is this a known problem, and what is the workaround?

Re: Problems Recognizing RAZR V3 from Motorola Phone Tools

Check device manger and see if the phone is listed under ports or
modems. Delete it if it is. Then do not plug the phone in till after MPT
is running.

With the phone plugged in, uninstall any instances of it in the Windows
Device Manager.

Disconnect the phone.

Start MPT, cancel through all of the phone configuration prompts.
Once the main MPT program comes up, Setup-LiveUpdate. You might have to do
that several times until it tells you that it is current, which is 4.28+.

Then plug the phone in and use the setup menu to scan for the new phone.

The newer versions will try to upgrade first, and will recognize the v3.

If LiveUpdate to MPT4.28 doesn't fix the problem, have a look at BVRP:

Mine is 4.0.4b, and insists that it's the latest version.

Re: Problems Recognizing RAZR V3 from Motorola Phone Tools

keep the cable off until it says it is searching- i had the 4.04 crap out
also- I ended up plugging the cable into another port and waiting until it
said it was searching for the phone before I plugged the phone in.
Unfortunately, I once had to remove the software completely for first
recognition, second time was the upgrade from 4.03 to 4.04.....

Re: Problems Recognizing RAZR V3 from Motorola Phone Tools

I uninstalled the device in Device Manager.

I started up MPT, but it insists on installing a phone. When I select
Cancel, it gives me a modal dialog that leads to one of two paths:
configure new device or exit. There is no path by cancelling that leads to
MPT starting up.

Finally, I tried to let it configure the phone, and it timed out again.
When I attempt to update my software, which is reporting as 4.04, it insists
that no new updates are available.

So where do I download this 4.28 version that you have? Apparently there
isn't a self-updating path from 4.04 to 4.28.

I would hate to install a Windows 2000 driver on Windows XP or Windows 2003
unless it is really a last resort.

And in case no one has mentioned this - the V3 uses a very specific cable.
It is the same one used for the 220 and the 180. Trust me on this - I have
3 other cables that were supposed to be "Compatible" with the V220 and I
ended up having to go to moto and getting the correct one.

Oh my goodness...
I was wrong, on both of those points.
The 4.04 doesn't allow you to start up the way I remember.
I have a profile named empty, with no phone configured, that doesn't work
any more. The one that has my BT configured will come up with no phone...
That's also a change from what I remember. Can't do much except configure
a phone, but it comes up.

And 4.04 is the latest. Complete mistake there, sorry.

Deleting the device, and not connecting it until MPT asks for it is
correct, to avoid WinXP loading drivers, and the BVRP forum specifically
mentions overstoring WinXP drivers with the win2000 driver to get MPT to
work.

I used two different USB cables with my v220 and MPT. One came with an HP
camera, the other came with a Sony MP3 player. Neither one was special in
any way that I am aware of.

Re: Problems Recognizing RAZR V3 from Motorola Phone Tools

I don't know about the v220 but I can tell you that the v3 and v3i work
with every mini USB cable I've tried including a Sony camera cable, an
MP3 player cable and even the very thin retractable cables. No problems
with any of them.

Re: Problems Recognizing RAZR V3 from Motorola Phone Tools

Given all the weird issues around getting MPT to work with the RAZR, does
Motorola maintain a tech support number for supporting users trying to get
the combination to work?

I just bought a new V3 and the first attempt to get MPT to recognize it failed.
I was given the opportunity to "retry". The V3 was recognized on the second
attempt. Same happened when I bought the Bluetooth USB dongle.
