I have a Nokia 9300, and pay about $40/month for an EDGE connection to
the Internet. I've experimented in the past, with very limited success,
using a $20/month media account to connect a laptop via bluetooth with
an ordinary phone. Can you do the same thing with the smartphone and the
more expensive account, and if so can someone point me to information on
how to do it?

Yes. I've done it with a Treo 650. See the FAQ below.
