Just got a v557. Upgrading one of our phones from TDMA.

When turning it on for the first time MediaNet Live Ticker started up.

I found the setting to turn it off. :-)

But I'm curious if there is a charge for using it.

The little brochure in the package talks about free channels so I
assumed that there was no charge. However when I talked to Cingular
Customer Service about some other questions, they said there is an
internet charge even for the free channels.

Anyone know which is correct: is there a charge for receiving the free
    ticker channels?

    Thank you.

There is no charge for using the free channels, but there is a charge for setting up any of the free channels you don't have as a default.

Anytime you want to add or delete a channel, you have to logon to Medianet to make those changes. Example, you want weather but you don't want CNN headlines, and want the free sports update, then you must log in to Medianet, to make any changes to which channels you get or don't get.

So again, no charge for actually receiving the free channels, but there is a charge to make any changes to the channels you receive (other than the default ones that are turned on when you get the phone). So if you do not have a Medianet package that gives you 1 or 5 MB of downloaded kb's, then it's going to cost .01 per kb to logon and make changes to your free channels on the ticker.

Personally I tried the ticker for a short time, and found that by the time the CNN headlines or Sport scores were updated, I'd have seen or heard the info somewhere else, hours before.

You may also find that with the ticker turned on, that some downloaded JAVA programs, may not work well, especially if they connect to the internet. Turning the ticker off and rebooting the phone (turning it off and back on), normally allows the java app that was not working or acting up, to work.

It is my impression that you get the updates by being on the internet and
therefore incurring probably very substantial charges. Perhaps not from the
companies supplying the information but for the on-line time required to get
    the updates.

Only the changes you MAKE using the MANAGE MY CHANNEL in the MediaNet Live Ticker Menu, which logs you onto the Medinet Website, there are no charges.

The "Updates" are what happens when the ticker info changes every few hours or so. Those are free, as long as you have not added paided content to your Channels. And most of the paid content is just a monthly fee, but some of them do require that you be logged on to the net to access them, PLUS their monthly fee, but you find this out when you view the different options for adding things to your TICKER, so that you don't add something by mistake, and freak out when the bill arrives.

I realize they are not always correct but I posed this question to
Cingular's customer support quoting your reply. I'll post their response.
    ***************************
I was told by a COR store the "Ticker" feature was very expensive to have
turned on. Someone else told me the following, is it correct? What if I
have the "Ticker" and no media package?

"Only the changes you MAKE using the MANAGE MY CHANNEL in the MediaNet
