    Hello.

I am eligible for NE2. I am having a hard time deciding whether to continue
with Verizon or go somewhere. It is very important to me to occasionally
tether my PDA or my Laptop to my phone to connect to my LAN at work (I use
VPN to my gateway at work once connected to the Internet on VZW's 1xrtt
network). If I sign up for another 2 years, I have to drop my old plan of
400 any time with National Access and Mobile Web, and sign up to a new plan.
I went to a VZW store yesterday and was told by the sales rep that new
plans/contracts now do not allow tethering (or using the phone as a modem to
your ISP) without a data plan. He further says, if your phone is capable of
DUN but you don't have a data plan, and you use the phone as a modem to your
ISP, you can be cut off by VZW it you are caught doing it. IS THIS TRUE???
Those of you who signed up for a new contract/plan and use your phone as a
modem, did you receive a reprimand letter from VZW? I don't care for their
broadband data. I have a 2.5gbps DSL at home.

Does Sprint or Cingular still allow minutes of use for using the phone as a
    modem?

And one more thing, VZW cripples the functionality of Bluetooth!

    Thanks in advance.

Cingular no longer offers CSD in just about all areas. Who would want to
anyway? It's 9600 baud. It would only cause aggravation and frustration.

I've never had a problem with using my minutes for data with VZW, but then
again such usage is extremely incidental for me.

Then again, I have NSR 150 (I don't use the phone that much, and I hate
roaming charges), so it isn't as if VZW could claim that I'm underpaying
    them.

Bluetooth has been crippled from day one.

Looks like your mind is made up.

Sprint supports tethering via the "Power Vision Attachable" plan. Without
this plan, you could possibly be charged per kb of data.

Or it could provide VoIP without breaking ToS agreements, etc.

Well, what no one said is that it will work.

I tether my LG vx8000 and get EVDO speed connects and do not have a data
plan and do not even get charged munites of use!

I have the $5/mo mobile web add-on is all. Them's the facts.

All you have to do is make a dial up connecion on your PC using the right
    userID/password:

    <10digitCellNumber>@vzw3g.com / vzw

dial #777 and set the modem init string to:

    AT$QCMDR=3

That's right. I just talked to Sprint Telesales and with the additional
$15.00, I can tether my PDA or Laptop to a Vision capable phone unlimited.
I think I will go with Sprint. I tried to do it online but I can port my
number online. Only with telesales or to the store. I will port my number
to Sprint at the end of my billing cycle with $$$Verizon$$$.

Thank you all for your input.

Re: Pls Confirm: VZW does not allow DUN using minutes?

If it is true that you are doing it, you may be caught someday. The VZW rep
at the store said that the mobile web is only for use with the phone's
browser. The tethering of the laptop using #777 and the modem init is only
allowed with older plans, like what I currently have. It may still work
with your phone, but for newer phones, I suspect that part of the
programming process of the phone (*228) is block the phone's modem
capability if you don't have the data plan, which is $59.99/month.

When did you sign up with your contract? What kind of plan do you have? LG
8000 was out when there was still "National Access MOU".

If I sign up to a new plan and get a new phone, the rep says, if I don't add
the data plan, the phone, even though it is capable of DUN, will not have
the VZW feature of being used as a modem.

Just hope that you won't get caught by Verizon.

The slowest speed that will work with poor sounding results is ~50kbps.
The current popular codec that is used for VoIP requires a minimum of
    90kbps.

You're asking if I was just making up crap? Thanks a lot.

There are multiple codecs for sub-9600 bps use. Among them are
    G.723.1a, G.729a, and G.722.2.

Also note that using CSD does not require IP. I'd likely do the IP
encapsulation on the other side of the modem.

You better check again.. VOIP usually won't work over` the slow
    connections...

You realize that the full-rate GSM codec is 13kbps, right? And many cell
phone CoDecs are roughly half that? Seems that whoever's CoDecs you're
looking at is seriously inferior to some of the stock CoDecs the cell phone
    companies use.

Wow, an order of magnitude decrease in efficiency due to inferior coding...
    that's sad.

2.5Gbps DSL in the USA? I don't think that has been deployed anywhere ...
including the VDSL deployments in Phoenix.
