What is involved in getting a new phone without having to sign a new
contract with Cingular? My contract expires in 10 months or so, and I
will probably change carriers then, so I don't want to renew my
contract. BUT, I do want a new phone. Advice?

Not sure what area you are in, but radio Shack is closing a number of stores
across the country (closing date slated at 7/31/06). If you go to there site
and enter your ZIP in their store locator the list will indicate which ones
    are closing.

Being in the same position you are with 8 months remaining on our contract
my wife and I wanted to dump our crappy V180's in hopes of better reception.
Stopped in one of the local Radio Shacks this weekend and picked up two Moto
SLVR L6's for 120 each (no contract required). All phones were 50% off with
the L7 at $175 and the RAZR at $200. My son grabbed the RAZR.

So if I buy a new phone, I can just take it in to Cingular and they'll
set it up for my phone number, account, etc?

You only need to pull your SIM card from the old phone and put it in
the new phone. You can buy any phone at a Cingular store at NO
CONTRACT price or directly from the manufacture or agent or even ebay.
It really depends on if you want a return policy and how much you want
    to pay for the phone.

You don't even need to talk to Cingular. Just remove the SIM from
your current phone and stick it in the new one. As long as the
new phone is a Cingular branded phone or "unlocked", it will
    just work.

Awesome! Thanks so much! Any advice on where to buy phones (ebay?) or
    which ones are good?
