I am starting to use more web-enabled apps with the Nokia 6682 I recently
    bought.

When starting them, they give me a choice as to which access point I want to
    use. A couple of questions:

    1. Which access point is best/fastest/cheapest (or does it matter):

    1. Home
    2. Media Net (I have)
    3. Multimedia
    4. Roam

I notice the settings are different for each of these.

    2. Is there a way to create a new access point to use a bluetooth
connection to a shared internet connection on a home broadband connection?

    3. Is tethering bad? Unethical? Illegal? Why do they make you buy yet
another pcmia card to get data access?

    4. Has anyone signed up for CSD lately in the Chicago market? Is it still
    obtainable?

    Thanks.

I am going to guess that Media Net is the one you need to select for
internet access. I assume this is wht you are using.

Again another guess. I would say no unless your phone offers a network
    connection service via Bluetooth.

Tethering is against Cingulars terms and conditions when used with Media
Net. It works, but you use tethering at your own risk.

Tethering is using your cell phone as a modem and hooking it up to your
    laptop.
CSD is doing it "analog"; using GPRS is doing it digitally.

CSD used to be OK with Cingular, but supposedly they've stopped offering
    this as a service.

You might try searching the past posts for CSD. I thought I saw a thread
recently were someone had signed up for the service, even though it is not
    advertised.

    The actual choices are:
    * MEdia Net
    * Data Connect
    - PDA Connect
    - Laptop Connect

Speed is about the same, except that data compression is available on
DataConnect, which can accelerate the loading of WAP pages with a loss
    of image quality.

Cost is much less for MEdia Net.

It is possible to share a cellular data connection, although Wi-Fi is
    more practical than Bluetooth.

    >3. Is tethering bad? Unethical? Illegal? Why do they make you buy yet

MEdia Net is not intended for tethering. DataConnect is.

CSD is very slow, 9600 bps, discouraged, and uses minutes rather than a
    data charge.

See the FAQ below for more information.

    Thanks John!

I was reading your stuff on modems, ahem, some 15 years ago I think!

You have always been a wonderful resource and help.

Maybe not intended, but I have and continue to connect to the Internet
on my PC and laptop with my tethered modem using iRDA. I have the
MediaNet unlimited package. To me, unlimited means unlimited,
regardless if the pages you view are on the phone's display or on my
PC's monitor. The information comes from the same source via Cingular
    servers.

Just because this is what it means "to you", doesn't mean that you are correct
in doing what you are doing. If you get your service cancelled ... don't come
    blubbering back here expecting sympathy.

Yeah, whatever. Life will be no different than it was before tethering.
I still have a backup Internet connection through another service. If
they disconnect my Medianet, the loss will definitely be Cingulars, as
they will no longer get $19.99 month from me.

Like other carriers, Cingular has a Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy.

You get Media Net, then A PDA, and move your SIM, guess what, you're
using Media Net on a PDA, and as long as you aren't transferring
gigabytes a day, evryone is happy.

Remind me again why this is such a probelm to you. It's been so long, I
forget what the rant specifically is.

Not my problem, but there's a major cost difference.
