Coverage in Alaska?

Is a map available on Cingular's coverage in Alaska?
The national map kinda shows it covering the 4 major roads, but it is pretty
fuzzy.
Thanks.

Look at "http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/" which will show the 800 Mhz
roaming coverage for T-Mobile, which will be the same as the roaming
coverage for Cingular.

Note that outside the cities, you'll get no coverage without an AMPS
capable handset, other than on major roads, but this is probably just
fine for most visitors.

What is an AMPS capable handset? Does it give coverage off the T-Mobile
map?
Thanks

No, T-Mobile, formerly VoiceStream, came way after any AMPS rollout.

Actually, Voicestream did offer AMPS roaming at one time, via the Nokia
NRM-1 AMPS sleeve for the Nokia 5190 and 6190. I suppose that they had
some sort of roaming agreement with the AMPS carriers.

You can see the sleeve at "http://wirelessgadgetguy.zoovy.com/product/NRM1"

I don't know if the sleeve worked with other GSM networks, but it worked
with Voicestream.

It was a clever system--leave the sleeve at home when you're in urban
areas, slide it on when you're venturing out into the boonies.

There is actually no meaningful difference in range.
