Also, a new Windows XP driver is available on Windows Update.
Performance does seem improved with the new driver and firmware. In
addition, EGPRS(EDGE) connections are now indicated with "EDGE" in the
green data triangle above the signal bars in Sony Ericsson Wireless
Manager 3.3.1.1518.

I installed that firmware update December 6, 2005. Not exactly new,
but it does work better as stated above. Also, "GPRS" is indicated in
the green data triangle instead of "EDGE" if one is connected via GPRS.
Sometimes I found a GPRS signal worked better than EDGE, although
normally it shouldn't. In some areas I could choose the connection
(EDGE or GPRS) by selecting the frequency band (800 or 1900) with the
Sony Ericsson Wireless Manager. Yes I know that EDGE and GPRS work on
both bands where provisioned, however it appears in some areas that one
band is only provisioned for GPRS.
