Twice recently, when I've had my phone right beside me, it's made the
"voicemail" ring, and when I checked the message, the caller said "well,
I guess you're not answering your phone". But I know it never rang until
the voicemail one. Once it made this little beep-beep-beep-beep with the
pitch going up about the time it should have been ringing, but I have no
idea what that means; I'd never heard it before.

Both times, I immediately dialed the cellphone from the landline and it
rang just fine, so I know I hadn't inadvertently set it to forward to VM.

    What gives?

The network may have "lost" the registration of your phone, possibly due
to weak signal. When that happens, calls go straight to voicemail.

Yep, and it's been happening on my two phones for the past four months after
working flawlessly from the same "5 bar" location. 10~20% of our calls go
directly to VM with no ring. Cingular still has no clue after all this time
of supposedly looking into the problem.

It could be a phone problem or (more likely) a cell problem. Consider
switching carriers. If there's a better carrier available, give
Cingular written notice (not email or phone) of the degradation (change)
in service and a reasonable time (e.g., 30 days) to remedy it. If the
problem isn't fixed, then you would have solid grounds to terminate
    without penalty.

I've recently been having the same problem. Not just one cell, it's
doing it in multiple locations 20+ miles apart; definitely not the phone
since I tried switching phones to check. I'm assuming it's something in
their network that Cingular will eventually figure out. But I'm a few
years out of contract anyway, so if it doesn't get fixed soon, I'll be
    switching carriers.
