How does Sprint compare with Cingular?

Added alt.cellular.Cingular as it is relevant to that group as well

So, by saying that the OP won't be able to use CDMA outside of the USA
is in error.

I'd suggest staying with Cingular.

To the OP: As others have or will point out, go for the ability to USE a
phone, NOT the phone itself.

I switch from Sprint to Cingular over 2 years ago, and NEVER regretted
it for a second.

Better, sturdier phones

Better coverage

GSM gives better voice reception

Mostly on 850 MHz instead of 1900 MHz, means better coverage, better

Far fewer dropped calls

Far fewer dead zones

No long waits on hold to get to a CSR

No upselling by CSRs

No hang ups by CSRs due to their handle time limits.

CSRs willing to escalate a call

Easy upgrade to new phone, just transfer the SIM.

Rollover minutes !!

It depends upon the area that you are in. Sprint is better than Cingular in
some areas and vice versa. Jack has a hard-on for Sprint because of
something that Sprint allegedly did to him that never really happened. Jack
used to terrorize the alt.cellular.sprintpcs on a regular basis.

Name one area where SprintPCS is better than Cingular in their native
coverage?

CulverCity, California is an area where Cingular is far better than
SprintPCS.

SprintPCS was better for me on I44 southwest of Oklahoma City.
Cingular, even before I went GSM, drops out more often. But at my
home, Cingular was much better.

Ken Caryl, Colorado, a small section of SW Littleton, in a valley.
Cingular is the only carrier not to have any real coverage here. When I
moved here 3 years ago, I was shocked to discover our cellphones didn't
work anywhere in the valley. Sprint has the best coverage here, followed
by T-Mobile (who I use), Nextel, and Verizon (who added coverage here
only in the last year.) In a field of six carriers (if you count Qwest,
who is a Sprint MVNO) Cingular comes in seventh, behind "smoke signals"
as an effetive means of wireless communication.

Generally, I'm a Cingular fan (I had service with them from 1993, in the
SBMS days, through mid-2003), but I'm frankly disappointed that they've
not improved Denver-area coverage at all since I moved here. (This is a
former AT&T Wireless service area, if it matters.) Between T-Mo's
expanded roaming coverage and Cingular's lack of improvements,both in and
around Denver, I rarely use my Beyond Wireless (Cingular TDMA) prepaid
"backup" phones anymore. (Frankly, the last couple of times I've used
them, they were roaming on Verizon, since Cingular coverage wasn't
available!)

I'm sure it is. However, if one carrier was truly superior to all others
in every way- cost, coverage, technology, etc., we'd all have that carrier.
We GET it, Jacklippe, you hate Sprint. Fine. That doesn't mean they're
wrong for everyone.

Apple Valley, CA. Right off I-15, halfway between San Diego and Las Vegas.

Sprint has better coverage than anyone else in Apple Valley, including in
the northeast corner where *no one* else has coverage -- not even Cingular or
Verizon.

Your mileage may vary. But I guarantee there are plenty of places where
Sprint is better than Cingular, just as there are undoubtedly plenty of
places where Cingular is better than Sprint. (Not that I'll ever know. As I've
said before, the chances of me ever switching to Cingular are exactly zero. I
will go without a cell phone before giving SBC/at&t any money, now that I've
had the good fortune to be able to drop their POTS and DSL services.)

Mostly those where it is roaming on Verizon analog, and you pay extra
for that and must have a phone with analog. Just compare NATIVE coverage
maps.

However many reasons to avoid SprintPCS which our exile from Cleveland

I'd like all Cellular carriers to ACTUALLY abide by their Industry Code
they claim to honor.

Laguna Niguel. Sprint works at my home and Cingular does not. I can also
name other areas where the opposite it true.

Both in M-O-L and Apple Valley, I lived in a corner of an otherwise well-
covered metro area where most carriers didn't have service. In both cases,
Sprint has a tower literally a two-minute walk from the house in question.

In M-O-L, coverage undoubtedly extends out into Lake Erie, where no one lives.
In Apple Valley, Sprint has two towers. One of them is in the neighborhood
from which I just moved; almost no one lives north of there, until you hit
the Barstow area. In both cases, the coverage I had was off the beaten path
and it was impressive that ANYONE had coverage.

I'm sure Cingular has similar spots. Repeat after me: "EVERY CARRIER has
areas of better-than-normal coverage, and areas of crappy or no coverage."
