Treo 680

I have heard that Cingular is selling the Treo 680. I'm interested in the
phone and am interested in any opinions anyone might have. I have never
owned a Treo.

They are very good devices if (a) you like the Palm paradigm and (b) the
organizer is important enough for you to put up with a certain amount of
hassle. The Treo 650 is a very good organizer, but only decent as a
phone due issues like having to reconfigure certain things manually.

I have the Treo 650 and I am very happy with it. Yes, the 680 is available
from Cingular as of today. It turns out to be $199 after rebates. After
reading the review at Mytreo.net, I do not see a whole lot of reason to
upgrade from my 650. There are a few enhancements but nothing to warrant the
upgrade cost for a current 650 user. The writer of the review indicates that
the 680 more favors the 650 than the 700. In any case you can read the

What things? Mine worked out of the box. I did not have to
reconfigure anything to make it work.

Sure, there are things I've reconfigured, but as a matter of
preference, not necessity.

I would also be interested in user opinions as well as WiFi info. The
website says the 680 is SD I/O capable, yet the description of the WiFi
card says for Palm 700 and a batch of non-phone palms.

I was also wondering if the SD Slot cover would cause problems for the
WiFi card.

More than twice the onboard storage, better reception and voice
clarity, and a card slot that won't let the SD card pop out by
accident.

To qualify for the rebate, you must also sign up for an unlimited data
plan at $40/month.

Officially, the PalmOS Treos do not support WiFi at all.

I see the improvements and do not disagree. In fact there are other features
that I like over my TREO 650, like the "ignore call with text" But
all-in-all I can't see where it would warrant the expense of $199. My 650
works great.

When tethering, profiles have to be enabled and disabled (unlike pretty
much any regular GSM phone). It's enough beyond the average user that
I gave up advising my clients to do it.

That's not using it "as a phone", that's using it as a modem. As a
PHONE, it works out of the box. As a PDA, it works out of the box. For
on-device data, it works out of the box. I have no experience using it
tethered to anything.

Ah, thanks, I hadn't put that together just by looking at the webpage.
How about unofficially? The TX has it built in and the card says it is
good for the T3 and T5.

One other question, do you have to sync the 680 via cable or bluetooth
or can you do it "over the air" ala blackberry?

I don't know about unofficially, I've never looked into it. Personally,
I have no use for WiFi.

I also have the 650 and have the same feelings as you do about upgrading.
After reading the review, I see no real need to upgrade to the 680.
