I have a Treo 650, which works reasonably well with Cingular, but my
wife has a horrid LG that we got stuck with when we signed on.
The worst interface I've ever seen and terrible voice.
With 5 months left on our contract, we cannot change phones without
    paying full retail from Cingular.

I'd love to pick up a good used phone off eBay, and was looking at the
Samsung x417 until I read user reviews on Cnet, most which were highly
    negative.

Can anyone recommend (from experience) a decent phone? Don't need camera
or MP3. I miss my ATT Startac.

    I'd check www.cnet.com.

They have cell phone reviews for editor's picks for Cingular phones:

    http://reviews.cnet.com/4323-6525_7-...5.html?tag=txt

    And for basic phones:

Too bad the best rated basic phone is Verizon only.

The Cingular choices look bleak. The Samsungs appear to have voice/sim
issues. The rest are filled with bloatware.
Anyone know of a good older basic phone that works great? Figure I can
    find one eBay

If you aren't looking for the latest phones, then Verizon typically has the
best quality of service in repeated surveys.

The problem with Verizon is for some assinine reason it cripples its phones
preventing them from using bluetooth to transfer files and only for
headsets. I don't know why but it does.

Yes, but have a Cingular Treo 650 that works well. Might end up ditching
Cingular in May, anyway. The only way they learn is from customers
    leaving.

Looking at picking up an LG CU400 (not the 500) on eBay which seems to
have pretty good reviews. Our funky LG is a something-something 1300.
They should have fired the designers that worked on this.

I used an LG C1300 for almost three years and had no complaints. In fact
three out of the four phones on our family plan were these. One finally
did die after my son left it out overnight in the rain.YMMV.

Yes, this was the freebie phone when we got our plan. Bad voice,
terrible interface. Unintuitive. Almost threw it out the car window last
week. Do all the LG have a similar graphic interface with Cingular?

I just replaced my old Motorola V400 with a Samsung A707 (Cingular Sync) and
it is like night and day (as it should be I suppose). The audio is clear and
everything works. The worst part was getting the right version of Samsungs
PC Studio software to sync the phone book with my PC. Like you I read the
reviews and I short listed the LG CU 400 and 500 and A707. I wanted
Bluetooth and 3G. I picked the A707 based on looks, the user interface and
price. My only concerns are the durability of the case and the latch for the
battery cover is not very tight. Other than that I am pleased, so far. I
feel user reviews on CNET and similar web sites need to be taken with a
pinch of salt. Someone has a bad experience and it tends to get magnified in
the write up, because that is what the writer focuses on. In reality the
A707 is not perfect, but it works as well as any phone I have used.

Looks like I'll be waiting for the iPhone.
