My wife's does that too sometimes (hers is silver, and a V3, if it makes a
difference). I've played with it and determined it's a bad connection to the
LCD inside the top half somewhere. Usually lightly squeezing it restores the
connection.
Oddly, my slightly older black V3 has never had that problem, though it's
seen more use.

Why did you have to pay for new ones? I had the same thing happen with
my girlfriend's phone, and when we called 611, after a couple of
diagnostic checks, (looking at the water sesitive dot in the phone,
checking for corrosion on battery etc..) they happily sent
her out a replacement. Were you outside of the one year
warranty?

I have had one for over a yar, got a replacement
due to the external speaker blowing, then the
girlfriend had the above problem, so I would agree, except that
Cingular swapped them out no problem, so I did not
have to bear the cost.
