I'm confused. The FAQ tells how to send SMS or MMS from a computer to
a cell phone, or SMS text from cell to computer, but not how to send a
picture. I tried dialing 121 with a picture and the message went into
the ether - no bounce, no receipt. But if I send a picture from
computer to cell, and then do a Reply, with a different picture, it
arrives at the computer. I'm not signed up for a data plan, and
the last time I selected "email" on the cell phone it didn't work
(had to use text msging to 121). Phone is a Z520a.

What are you confused about? 121 is simply the gateway. The message
still has to be addressed. MMS works the same way as SMS.

So what I did was correct - dialing 121 to send a message prefixed
with an email address - it just randomly failed?

No, 121 is a gateway, not the address of the message.

Whatever you call it, I've successfully sent text-only messages to
email by "dialing 121 to send a message prefixed with an email address".
This time I tried to send a picture and it failed. I think you are
saying cell-to-email messages should be sent the same way, regardless
of whether they are text-only, or contain pictures. Correct? In
which case my picture was dropped in error (or will arrive randomly
in a few months

What I'm actually saying is that your phone needs to be configured
properly to send MMS messages, which is quite different from SMS:
