Smartphone Max and laptop internet access

Has anyone tried to use their smartphone internet plan on their
Cingular account to access the internet via their laptop? I don't
necessarily mean by tethering their phone to their laptop, but alsl by
inserting their SIM into the laptop's HSDPA wireless card.
