Not if you understand what T-Mobile@Home actually is. It's an integrated
cellular service that seamlessly switches to VoIP over Wi-Fi or back to
cellular depending on whats available. That way, if you get crummy cell
coverage at home, like you probably do in your parents' basement, the
phone automatically switches to Wi-Fi and uses the SAME phone number, so
you don't need to play any games with launching a VoIP client or setting
    up conditional call forwarding.

This is a large country which you'll discover one day when you're old
enough to travel without your nanny. Even Wi-Max won't cover all of it.
VoIP isn't going to completely replace landlines and cellular anytime soon.

What, your parents are threatening to take you off the family plan?
Don't worry- even you can qualify for prepaid...

Then tell me why other Wi-Fi enabled cellphones (like my MDA that
actually runs VoIP NOW, instead of "maybe someday" like iPhone), or the
plethora of Skype Wi-Fi phones hasn't already made a dent in the
    cellphone industry?

    Again, there's nothing new on the iPhone. Wi-Fi? I've had a Wi-Fi
enabled phone for nearly a year and a half. Visual Voicemail? Got it-
it's pretty slick and easier than calling in. MP3s? Movies? Google Maps?
Push e-mail? It's all been done, and those of us who wanted those
things already have them and use them.

iPhone simply packages them up real purdy-like and (probably) makes them
easier to use. (I only say "probably" because, like everyone else here,
I haven't used one yet and can't speak with certainty.)

99% of the time? Only if you intend to use it mostly in your parent's
    basement.

I use a T-Mobile MDA- an EDGE device with Wi-Fi in Denver and the
surrounding suburbs. Unlike in Silicon Valey, or New York City, perhaps,
there isn't ubiquitous wi-fi on every street corner- a LARGE portion of
my data use comes from my mobile operator.

Come visit the midwest and you'll stop believing the entire US is
blanketed in wi-fi hotspots, and you'll realize wi-fi is NOT a reasonable
defense for a $600 phone not to include 3G.

Look at T-Mobile- they've been pretending for years that Wi-Fi is a
suitable substitute for 3G by bundling subscriptions to their
coffeeshop/bookstore Hotspot network in their EDGE dataplans, and it's
not enough- they're (finally!) rolling out 3G later this year.

Heck, cellular hasn't replaced landlines. Most still have landlines to
the house, and I don't know of a big company as of yet that completely
    done away with landlines.

    Well, it's complete nonsense.
