    Apple plans cheaper, Nano-based phone
Chang said follow to iPhone could be priced at $300 or lower
    Reuters
    Updated: 2:52 p.m. MT July 9, 2007
Apple plans to launch a cheaper version of the iPhone in the fourth quarter
that could be based on the ultra-slim iPod Nano music player, according to
    a JP Morgan report.

Kevin Chang, a JP Morgan analyst based in Taiwan, cited people in the
supply channel that he did not name and an application with the U.S. Patent
and Trademark office for his report.

Apple filed a patent application document that refers to a multifunctional
handheld device with a circular touch pad control, similar to the Nano’s
    scroll wheel.

Apple did not respond to requests for comment.

Long lines of people turned out on June 29 when U.S. sales began for the
iPhone, a mobile phone with a music player and Web browser. Analysts have
estimated that sales in the first weekend were as high as 700,000 units.

Chang said a way to follow up the iPhone with a cheaper version would be to
convert the Nano into a phone and price it at $300 or lower. The iPhone
sells for $500 and $600, depending on storage space.

“We believe that iPod Nano will be converted into a phone because it’s
probably the only way for Apple to launch a lower end phone without
severely cannibalizing iPod Nano,” he said noting that the new phone could
    have “rather limited functionality.”

Because of the anticipated lower price, 2008 sales of 30 million to 40
million units “is achievable,” Chang said.

This would be a much larger volume than is expected of the first iPhone,
Apple has targeted sales of 10 million units in 2008, which would give it a
1 percent share of the global market.

Sales of the iPhone are expected to be limited to a small percentage of the
market due to its high price tag, particularly in the United States where
85 percent of consumers tend to spend $100 or less on cell phones.

But analysts predict that a cheaper phone from Apple, which leads the
digital music player market, could pose a much bigger threat to
long-established phone makers such as Nokia, Motorola, Samsung Electronics
and Sony Ericsson, owned by Sony and Ericsson.

On the editorial page of the local daily newsrag, this morning, there was a
hilarious political cartoon showing this goofy kid throwing the iPhone over
his shoulder into a huge pile of electronic toys. He's saying to the
suited salesman, "I'm bored. What's next?"

iPhones will be on Ebay in a couple of months begging for 1/2 price.

Somewhere there are huge warehouses full of iPhones being held back to hold
    the price up......Hope someone finds them...(c;

Probably would've been a better move by Apple from the get-go. At
least people don't expect to be able to use an
iPod like a pocket computer, unlike the iPhone which screams "look!
    I'm a PDA" but can't run software.

History repeats itself. It was about 8 months ago when people were
fighting and getting shot, stabbed, punched
and robbed both when waiting in line for a Playstation 3 and after
they got the damn thing. The hype
machine around it was simply incredible. Fast-forward to today:

"Playstation-what? I'm too busy playing this Wii I finally was able to
get today to care about that POS!!!"

You couldn't be more wrong. I am not an iPhone user, nor do I plan to
buy one, but out of the box, the iPhone provides a huge amount of
functionality that smartphone users use all the time. There is no way
that people paying that amount of money for a smart phone, let alone a
cell phone calling/data plan would just throw away the device after a
few months, especially since they will likely lock in for a two year
cell phone contract. Not to mention that even though full fledged apps
can't be developed for the iPhone; there are a hell of a lot of new
functions that can be added by third-party developers via Web 2,
although I for one would like to see Apple open up the full API. In
fact, it wouldn't surprise me if some enterprising software developer
figures out how to get at the full API without Apple's help. That person
will be wealthy, as a result.

That's illogical. Apple has a monopoly on the iPhone. Apple can set the
iPhone's price at whatever it wants regardless of the iPhone's supply.

I held one in the deserted ATT store across from Northwoods Mall in N
Charleston, SC, one of three on a little display to "make 'em drool over
something they can't have". It's cute, too small to watch movies on, has
crappy audio without earphones and is too BIG for a cellphone. I saw my
reflection in the window making a call and I looked really stupid holding
    a Palm Pilot to my ear talking to it...(c;

Specifically, what new function were you referring to?

    Play music.....no, no, not that....
    Play video.....no, no, not that....
look at webpages...no, no, not that
download files....no, no, forbidden by ATT
email....no, no, that's not new, either.
    Play online games....no, also forbidden
    Run Windoze software....oops, sorry.
Run MAC software....no, it doesn't do that, either, I'm told.
Run Palm software....no, no, that wouldn't consume enough power.
Do Palm Pilot "things"....no, no, that's not new any more

    Hmm...It's not a HDTV....It's not a surround sound stereo, either....It
has no beverage functions or food processors and I don't THINK anyone has
figured out a way to have some new orgasms with it. I didn't see any
    holes...(c;

SPECIFICALLY, what NEW "functions" does it have, outside of the two-
fingered slick touchscreen? Everything except webpages and email are
forbidden by its ATT masters so there'll be no new stuff from that port.
It has little STORAGE, no hard drive and no way to access the OS to
"install things" its masters at Apple/ATT don't want on their system.

GM has a monopoly on Cadillac Escalades, too, but it cannot demand any
price it wants for it because the market is FLOODED with Escalades selling
    far below its dream price.

So, as with every other new product, we create a shortage to maintain
retail pricing until, at least, the richest and most drooling customers
have paid full retail for it...and its sales go into the post-fascination
slump every product, including this one, goes through. Then, prices will
drop until sales pick up to a target level, again. Remember those big-
screen $10,000 (various technology) TV sets Circuit City now sells for
    $1595? Same idea....

    That cartoon on the editorial page was spot-on accurate....(c;

The iPhone simply screams, "Look, I'm a really cool multi-function phone

That's what people have been waiting for. That's why it's selling.

I listed out many new features above, read it again. a hard drive would

100% correct, and that's why it has become the fastest selling cell
