HSDPA (3G) data coverage and performance / compare to Sprint?

Howdy,

I find myself in need of high speed data and laptop tethering. Most
places I read say that AT&T's 3g data coverage is pretty anemic in
comaprison to Sprint's EV-DO network, and that data rates are capped
at 1.5mbps.

Anyone with experience with this? My primary need will be for laptop
tethering, or just getting a data card.

Best Regards,

True- you can check the respective websites of the two carriers for
coverage maps.

Keep in mind that your data connection doesn't stop working outside
the 3G areas, it just falls back to 2G. Cingular's EDGE offers about
a 150-200k connection- certainly not 3G, but respectable for mobile
use.

In Houston Texas I could never test 3G, as it came and went; and
overall coverage is / was like swiss cheese.

Which are generally not reflective of users actual experiences
though. :-)

Unfortunately not for the work I do. I'm trying to feel out if I
need to get my data service through Sprint or Verizon. The more I
read the more I think that might be the way to go.

Sprint might be the way to go- according to my neighbor, who uses a Sprint
data card, he can also roam on Verizon EVDO- I'm not sure if the reverse is
true, so Sprint might get you the best of both worlds.
