Where are all of the iPhones?

Just an observation. I happened to have been traveling back east
recently and was in NYC when the iPhone launched.

Then I was back home for a few weeks (Denver) and this last week I've
been in San Francisco and the Bay Area.

I just realized that in a month since it's launch, I have yet to actually
see anyone whip out an iPhone (except an employee when I visited an Apple
store.)

I'm obviously a cellphone geek and tend to notice people's phones.
Considering the success of the initial launch, you'd think I'd have seen
ONE in use by now! For example, in DC this June and SF this week, I was
surprised by the number of T-Mobile Sidekicks in use compared to at home
in Denver. Obviously Blackberries are ubiquitous in any downtown area,
but I haven't seen one single iPhone "on the streets" yet. When the RAZR
originally launched, for example, I tended to notice people using them,
probably just to show them off- I'd have expected people to be whipping
out their iPhones and check e-mail or something just to be noticed using
their new status symbol, but haven't seen one yet.

I haven't seen one in DFW yet either. Was it all a hoax?

I just got back from coffee and a bagel at Panera Bread. The guy in
line in front of me was talking on an iPhone. Also noticed some on the
streets by the iPhone earbuds with the mike. I am in the DC area. But
where I have noticed them the most is on the train. I am on the train a
lot between Washington and New York, and I have noticed two or three
iPnones every trip. I have asked a few of the iPhone users if they like
their phone and all said they really liked it. I always ask about Edge
on the train, because that is my main concern, if I got one I'd like
the internet to be usable on the train, and they say it is usable.

I will pop the cork on this one.

When the new owners bought their phone they signed an agreement to never
reveal their phone in public. If caught doing so, they would be turned off,
charged the full two year contract aand be personally beaten with a wet
noodle by Steve.

It is rather strange. Even in Cupertino, I've not seen a single one. I
heard that Apple is going to give each employee an iPhone soon, so when
that happens I'm sure I'll see more around.

I remember last May my daughter was working on an iMovie at school, and
wanted to work on it MovieMaker then convert it to iMovie format, which
would require a Mac (there's a way around this, but it's complicated and
doesn't work all that well). I realized I did not know a single person
around here with a Mac. Strange. My nephew who freelances doing Final
Cut Pro editing for studios offered to let us go down to LA to use his
Mac. I was waiting for Leopard, or at least a free upgrade to Leopard
before buying a Mac, and was disappointed that they pushed it out so far.

My plane to Boston from LA last Thursday had 3 people with them.
But plane was mostly business types with old company-issue Blackberrys
and families with standard flip phones

I saw my first iPhone today. I was at the 40th anniversary "Summer of
Love" concert in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, and one person
sitting next to us had one. No WiFi unfortunately, and with 40,000
people attending in such a small area the AT&T wireless network was
overwhelmed and people were getting "system busy." Verizon phones had no
problems, but Verizon had rolled in some mobile units to increase capacity.

Great concert. Talk about second hand smoke! Canned Heat and Jefferson
Airplane were awesome. Of course my kids were amused by Country Joe when
he did the "Fish Cheer." Gotta go find my Woodstock CDs. Harold, Turn up
the Mike! Some guy behind me tried to trade me a joint for one of my
beers, but I told him the beer I had was high-class beer, and it was
worth at least two.

Re: Where are all of the iPhones?

I agree that it's rare to see an iPhone and I live in New York City. Since the phones were sold, I've seen them only 3X in the NYC subways. Last week I saw a guy using it to play iTunes on the train. I saw a young lady using one last summer in the Canal St. station and I saw a guy also using it on a train. He told his friend he was able to use GPS to track them as the train rolled along. It's true that the iPhone is hardly seen. Maybe owners are afraid of theft or of dropping it. The phones are sleek but are very slippery and easy to drop. Apple claims that well over 1 million were sold. It's strange that the $600 rebate checks will just cover the cost of a new iPhone.
