I called Cingular this morning and gave then an example of why I wanted
a GAIT phone from them. Their response was that a GASIT phone would not
do me any good as some of the areas I am traveling through are not
    covered by any cell phones.
What an idiot! Suffer with less coverage because in a few places there
is no coverage? Good bye Cingular.

I was at a party on Friday night and several people were playing with their
    GSM SE T616
phones (two on AT&T, one on Cingular). It was amusing because they're
    laughing at my
big old Motorola 270C, and I tell them that I prefer being able to make
    calls to taking
pictures. They all ADMIT that the coverage sucks on GSM, but they like the
    phones, and
they all travel to GSM countries (UK, France, Israel).. The ones on AT&T had
    just
changed from TDMA, and they had really experienced the coverage issue, the
    one who
was on Cingular was clueless, he had had Cingular for so long that he had no
    concept
    of coverage.

No concept of coverage with Cingular?? Where are you? I have great
coverage throughout the country (the worst is in Wisconsin/Illinois, but
it's roaming coverage, so still coverage). Cingular Preferred Nation
and Cingular Nation have the best coverage, and you night/weekend
minutes apply wherever your anytime minutes apply. I'm debating whether
or not to stick with Cingular because I now live in an area that
Cingular does not service (it's not roaming, chargewise) and I cannot
get a local number. Rollover saves me every three or four month from
huge overage (sometimes up to 400 minutes of overage). Before I moved,
they politely told me that they could not deal with coverage or network
features in the area in which I was moving, because that was the sole
responsibility of the romaing partner. I gave them a call when my
caller ID and voicemail indicator didn't work. They called the roaming
partner, and two days later it did work. I was persistend, but polite.

Of course, the Preferred Nation requires either a TDMA/AMPS or GAIT
handset, while the Cingulr Nation requires a GAIT handset. Don't get
that confused with the Cingular GSM Nation.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I'm in California. Cingular is GSM only
out here, and is consistently ranked as the worst carrier in terms of
    coverage.

Cingular and T-Mobile (piggybacked on Cingular) share the distinction of
being "Bottom-feeders"Cingular's customer service demonstrates that they
couldnt care less if they tried to! ATTWorthless**** is the next in line
with thier oversold TDMA system thats NEVER ready to get the job done (ATTWS
says your handset is at fault or YOU dont know what your doing or talking
about). Sprint is next with thier lousy PissPoor building penatration (or
serious lack of it) and having their customers ROAM on Verizons system at
$0.69 a minute even in your own home town(SPCS's customer service KNOWS they
suck, but they tell you to re-read your contract and to call again!)
Nextel...fair to good coverage, holes here and there, good customer service
(Especially if your GOVT) Will bend over backwards to try to help, but
repeated billing mistakes are the norm, requiring monthly calls to CS to
*FIX* the problems over and over again..callers sound like they have
clothespin on nose and its going to get worse....Verizon..good
coverage..some holes here and there, good building penatration...Good
customer service, but with LOTS of billing errors when first starting
up.Have had 2 months of screwed up bills.....this is in the Southern
    California Areas....Eddie

I LOVE my clunky 270c. Use it for work.

I too have a 270c. It has the best speakerphone I've ever
seen. Anybody know any new phones with great speakerphones?

Are there any flip phones with speakerphones? I don't think
    I've ever seen one.

I am in Everett, Washington. Everyone provides good coverage here.
Ironically much of the area I travel in is well known for supporting
GAIT phones- including Canada. AT&T sells the T62U. My problem has
been a reluctance to walk away from a cell phone company that has done
rather well for me when all they need to do is say yes over something
that they sell in high volume in their own home turf. So what if I end
up roaming on TDMA? That is my problem, not theirs. This is home turf
for AT&T but I doubt if they would refuse to sell GAIT phone in a store
    back east.
