Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

Sort of anyway. Came up yesterday morning (10/1) for several hours,
then the phone switched back to TDMA for rest of the day. Guess they
had a glitch or two or three. Back on GSM this morning. One benefit,
the Nokia 6340i instantly "finds" GSM when you turn it on versus 30
seconds or more for TDMA. Also, it's a couple of bars stonger at the
house than TDMA was--would have guessed it would be the same.

Re: Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

I noticed yesterday on my AT&T Motorola T721 that Cingular was showing
up all day yesterday. I tried to select it a few times, with no luck.
I think they must not be allowing "roamers" on it, other than Cingular
roamers.

I'm glad to have Cingular GSM in town though. Cingular seems to be a
more "friendly" roamer than T-Mobile for AT&T customers, such as myself.

Re: Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

The soft launch for GSM in Dallas/FW was yesterday. I have a 6340i and
it was in GSM all day yesterday and I had no problems at all. On TDMA
my signal was also weak at my house and yesterday on GSM it was about 2
bars stronger also.

Early yesterday morning I had GSM at my home near Tollway & Geo. Bush, but
not at my office in Addison. Same experience today. I don't know whether
it is timing or location.

Will my T62u need to be reprogrammed once we're up full-time?

Re: Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

All of Cingular's GSM overlays are 850 (800mhz band), since they are
changing their 800 TDMA transeivers into GSM.

Re: Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

I have a question for you, how can you tell that your T62u is on gsm?
From what I was told, the only phone you could tell on was the 6340i.
Is that not correct?

Re: Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

According to the (very poor) owners manual, the signal strength has a bar
over it when GSM/GPRS is available. And apparently it resets the time when
it switches between TDMA and GSM. Its asking me to confirm the new time is
what caused me to notice the indicator.

Re: Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

Perhaps the easiest way to know when the T62U is in GSM or TDMA is to
enter *777* and reboot your phone. You don't need to make any other
adjustments but a letter will appear on the screen to tell you what you
are on- G for GSM and so on. You really do not need to mess around with
of the other features that will now appear on your phone.
GAIT phones are designed to run off of GSM. Once everyone goes GSM the
cell phone will simply stay on GSM. But GAIT will remain a handy phone
for several years, especially if you travel in rural areas.

Re: Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

I have a 6340i and I can tell that it is in GSM because when I am on a
phone call in TDMA the bottom right of the screen says "Mute." But when
you are on a call in GSM the bottom right of the screen says "Hold"
Also when on a call in TDMA the screen just reads call. But on GSM the
screen reads call name of person you are talking to. If the person is
not in your phonebook it will say Call 1.

Re: Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

Is there such a setting for the 6340i?

Another way to quickly tell if you are on GSM is to check the Messages menu.
When on TDMA the "Service command editor" selection is grayed out. Under
GSM that selection is available.

You can also tell on the 6340i when you are in a phone call on gsm what
was the mute button in TDMA turns to hold on GSM.

Re: Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

Unknown. A Tech spilled the beans on the T62U hidden setting when it
first came out. I was pleased to see that Cingular has not changed that
software command. Frankly, it's there to allow techs to make
adjustments.

The only thing I've read on the 6340i is that Nokia made it easy to
unlock their phones. I'll dig around.

Re: Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

I entered the *777* sequence and now have the "G" displayed on my phone in
Addison. (If for any reason I want to turn this feature off, do I enter the
same sequence?) However I'm not seeing the GPRS indicator I mentioned
previously. Is GPRS not activated yet, or does my T62u have a problem with
it?

On another subject, I've never been able to retreive e-mail or access the
web when outside my home area. Is that the way it's supposed to work, or do
I need to contact CS?

Thanks for your help.

Bob

Re: Dallas/FW GSM is live/unbarred

To undo *777* you need to go to EXTRAS. It will now have a debug tool
section. Select this and go to Adv. debug mode. Select off. Reboot
your cell phone. All the *777* options will no longer be available.
This has nothing to do with your GPRS.

Sorry for the long trailer... I haven't learned how to edit the sheet
yet.
