Cingular Extend

This seems to be new term being used by Cingular. Some of the posts I
have seen suggest that this means Roaming.

What it means is that you are roaming. If you are on the nation wide gsm
plan you will not be charged for cingular extend. The reason for this is
that cingular has a contract with t-moblile and at&t to use their towers.

Cingular Extend can be very deceiving because it does NOT always mean
you will be charged for roaming. It means that you are not on
Cingular's network. Whether you will be charged for roaming depends on
what price plan you are on. For instance, I live in Dallas and
customers who are on the Texas Statewide Plus plan are charged no
roaming as long as they are in Texas. Even if there phone says Cingular
Extend, they are not charged roaming if they are in their home area.
The billing system knows to not charge roaming fees. Where as the phone
knows whose network it is on. Ok, rambling now but you get the point.

Doesn't Cingular provision phones with different IRDB's for different rate plans?

In theory, yes. However they are notoriously lax on switching them when you
change rate plans or equipment. Also, they tend not create specific ones for
local or regional plans. When I had a Kansas City home-only plan, my phone
would display "Cingular" in St. Louis (which was a Cingular area, although it
was roaming for me.)

When I had Preferred Nation plans, I just went by the Cingular orange maps,
and ig otred the phone's display. Once in a great while I'd be dinged for roam
charges, but a call to customer service would get them reversed.

'Cingular Extend' started with the Preferred Nation plans to denote
$.79/min roaming calls.
