I have a HUGE Cingular bill this month due to having
to make lots of calls (job-hunting).
Is there any way I can purchase a SIM, or rent a phone,
for unlimited local calls for a month or so?

Can you afford the monthly cost? The easiest solution is to go in and
upgrade your current plan, get extra minutes, you can always change it
back later. Cingular plans are unbelievably flexible. I had to adjust
my plan a few times until I had the right amount of coverage. Now my
bills are at an expected norm with very little changes. Have you even
talked with Cingular yet?

Not really -- the number of minutes I need now are to
be found in the $149-$200 plans. Usually, all I need
is that in my current, $69 plan. I was hoping to find
something like a $30/month unlimited local calling plan
to use for the month.

I take it then that you are unemployed, have no land line, and want free
service. Contact the labor department and ask them for help.
Cell phones are a luxury item.

Huh? I do not have a permanent place of residence, am unemployed,
and am looking for work. Since I have no land line, and no permanent
residence at present, a cell phone is very helpful in finding
work, and thus *ending* my need for it.
Any reason why you are writing this quite mean-spirited posting?
Is $30/month for a local calling plan "free"???
What's your problem?

Unlimited local for $30? Sure- it's called a landline! ;-)
If Cricket or Metro PCS operates in your area, they
do unlimited local for $30-40, but they aren't GSM,
and require that you use their phones, so you'd be
looking at $100 or more including the month's service.
For that kind of money you could just bump your
Cingular service from $69 to $200 for a month and
then back.

Where are you located? Because one of the unlimited local carriers
maybe better for you (Cricket, MetroPCS, etc)...

You're probably right -- I'm not looking to this month's $150 extra
I've alrady racked up in per-minute charges, tho'. :-(

Actually Cingular is pretty good about "retroactively" changing your
plan as long as the cycle (month) hasn't ended already. If you're
still in the current cycle so the overage charges haven't "booked"
yet, you could call them now and bump up your plan and have it
effective the first day of the current cycle. Just make sure you
tell them it needs to be backdated, otherwise they'll assume you
want it effective the first day of the next cycle.

Re: Is there such thing as a temporary, unlimited-use phone?
Sorry Spam, I don't mean to be mean, but what you want is not going to
be provided by any of the major players. Once you pay off the big bills
an upgrade in service will make that trouble go away.
I see a couple of suggestions to go to Cricket but I don't think that
you need the expenses of getting in with them right now. The problem is
that you'll be paying both the old cell phone bill and the new cell
phone bill or facing a credit mess. Unemployment sucks.
I hope you land a job soon.

Thanks for the apology and explanation -- sounded like you
were blaming me for being unemployed or something. :-)
And thanks for the advice... I'll try doing the "up my plan
temporarily" option and see if that helps out. Otherwise,
yeah, I'd rather not carry a phone around every where I go.
When I get a place to live, I'll most likely be ditching it.
Hey, no dropped calls! :-)
