Like you, I've got Cingular 850 GSM crawling all over the DFW area.
Works good for a really green network.

well, my phone shows no indication of a gsm signal. i have a nokia
6340i. you guys are probably getting late night soft signals. they
usually start testing any new upgrades to the network after 10pm to 5am.
as of this moment (9:03am) i am getting no gsm. so i say again......when
is the official luanch date? when will i start to see the new
commericials? When will there web site be updated (for the dallas/ft
worth area) with the new gsm phones? only then can you say cingular has
    luanched gsm in dallas/ft worth.

I don't know whether you're intentionally trying to spread incorrect
information, or have some other agenda. GSM is definitely up and running in
D/FW and has been for a week. Either your phone is not working correctly,
you don't understand the indicators on your phone, or you're not in the
Dallas area. Please don't try to sound so authoritative when you are so
    obviously wrong.

let me tell you this mr. bob walker, i have worked in the wirless
industry since 1992 in house and field. i would know if my phone is
working gsm. i can smell gsm. my phone is showing no gsm indicators.
maybe its only up in certain areas, but in the area where i live and
work, i have not seen anything on my nokia 6340i telling me im on a gsm
network. it is not my intent to plant false info. im just telling you
what im seeing from my end and i want some definite, accurate and
official gsm launch info for cingular wireless. if its up and running,
then why doesnt cingular customer service tell me its up and running
when i call them. sounds like your the one intentionally spreading false
    information mr.walker.

Re: WHEN CINGULAR GSM WILL BE HERE IN DALLAS???

Cingular is up and running or some other outlaw carrier has been
providing wireless service in the band space owned by Cingular.
It doesn't matter what your phone does, its there.
Your phone probably hasn't had its roaming database updated yet, it may
take some time so the network doesn't get swamped.

You need to understand that customer service people don't typically know
    ****.

Well, I was in Dallas again today, and my phone spent the entire day on
GSM. Must be a rogue carrier.

Well, in this case I'm afraid your "smeller" is out of whack. Cingular
in Dallas/Ft Worth went live with unbarred GSM on 10/1 and after a
couple of days of ups and down has been very stable since. In fact more
stable than I expected for the cutover. Since then I've been over a
good portion of the city and I've only caught my 6340i reverting to TDMA
in one area--in a very "hilly" section of Cedar Hill.

You DO know that the 6340i doesn't HAVE a GSM/TDMA/AMPS indicator? You
have to activate field test OR go to settings/call settings/forwarding
(fax forwarding etc are greyed out on TDMA/AMPS) OR make a call and look
    for HOLD rather than MUTE....

Could be your 6340i is defective or doesn't have the proper database
downloaded--maybe your account isn't flagged as GAIT?

I have a SE T316 I bought for a trip to Italy this fall and I have been
using Cingular GSM all over DFW for a while. I put the SIM in from my 6340i
    and talk on...
I do like the Nokia phone better but the small SE phone is cool. Downtown
last night was the first trouble I have had on the GSM network. I did expect
that with the huge crowds in the West End....It took a while to get a call
to go through. All in all, Cingular gas a good GSM network here in DFW, very
few dead spots that I have found.

i guess my 6340i is running on the GSM network now. My mute button on my
phone, has now turned to hold. The GSM network here in Dallas seems to
be up, but Cingular hasnt started advertising yet for the new phones,
nor do they sel them yet. If I purchase a GSM phone that works on the
frequency that CIngular uses, can I just stick my SIM card in that phone
and have it work on the cingular network? Is it just that simple or will
    I have to call cingular.

Lessee, the date of your post indicates your 'last night' reference
would be Sat night - in the West End (downtown Dallas) - on Texas/OU
weekend - Texas State Fair in full swing - two major car races within 40
miles - and the Cowboys playing a home game - and it took a while to get
a call to go through? Gee! I guess they don't build networks like
    they used to.

That was my point, with all the extra people in town, the "new" GSM network
worked quite well. I have been in many places where a huge crowd brings
    networks to a halt.
