Does anyone know if Cingular has any plans to implement the direct connect
feature that Nextel uses? I heard that the patent is about to run out for
Nextel, and other providers might start offering this feature. Any
information on this is appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

you can bet on it...people have been leaving cingular left and right
and not solely due to the customer service....people have been leaving
other wireless carriers as well, nextel has been getting these people
because of their stupid walkie talkie bull**** and everyone wants to
pretend they are covert spies, talk to the wrist agents and ****....u
can bet cingular is working on implementing a similar service to keep
the people they have suckered so far.

There have been no rumors or guesses that Cingular will have PTT.

Re: Direct Connect for Cingular?
They have had a similar feature for years.
ITS CALLED SPEED DIAL.
walkie talkie is alright, but I don't want everybody around me
listening to my call.
But seriously, yes they are looking into it.

Verizon Wireless has "Push To Talk" that it started offering in the
latter part of this summer (Q3). However, according to reviews, the
Verizon service (when compared to Nextel's) doesn't even break the surface.

Re: Direct Connect for Cingular?
If you have Nokia 3650 (or most other Symbian OS smartphone) and the
unlimited GPRS plan, then you can use the following service for PTT:
www.fastchat.com (subscription based)
http://www.indtelesoft.com/buzz2talk/ (free)
of course, the other party needs the same phone, service and plan
Wayne
P.S. these PTT features will eventually make it to serivce providers
like Cingular, ATTWS & T-Mobile. Unfortunately, do to the architecture
of GSM (and even CDMA which Verizon is advertising PTT service) has
inherent lags in the delivery of the PTT voice packets over the data
channels. That's because the Nextel service runs on a dedicated
half-duplex channel on its network - the only one of it's kind.

i for one certainly hope not. i can't stand all those idiots who make me
listen to their entire conversations because they don't want to dip into
their monthly minutes to make a call.

No ****. I've nearly gotten in fights telling these rude asses to knock it
off in a restaurant. Absolutely no reason for it. Could it be connected to
the whole fast car/small penis theory?

Re: Direct Connect for Cingular?
No doubt Cingular will head into that area too. But what is the
advantage, other than being in style?
I hear a lot of chaps running around using PTT, loudly. I hear both
sides of a private conversation without any desire to hear it. Like
some folks have pointed out, this is both annoying and distracting.
Using a hands free headset is a much better approach.

I've used Nextel. I fail to understand how the direct connect feature,
as a feature, is inherently better.
In that it's cheaper, great. In that you can easily restrict its usage
to people within a certain group (instead of giving Joe Streetsweeper a
full-open cell phone), great. But how it operates? No big deal. Just
pick up the phone and dial.
Direct Connect is a good thing only when seen within the context of it
being significantly cheaper and/or easier to control usage.

There is no patent on "Push to Talk"! It is a 2-way feature and it is used by
all the two way companies worldwide.
Nextel is a two way company and as such uses "push to talk" and they call it
Direct Connect.
As for push to talk, Verizon has already implemented it and the reports vary
from user to user. Some like it and some don't.
Word has it that Sprint PCS is also planning to implement push to talk. We are
wating for them to implement it or not.

Re: Direct Connect for Cingular?
Actually they have. Press releases on the Wireless market said that Sprint
and Verizon have already implimented this, and Cingular is said to be
working on something for next year some time. No official word from Cingular
though.

I know a lot of people who use Verizon's PTT (although they say it is
not that good) because they are in an area and they need to have "open"
communciation for about 10 hours...I'd like to see a cell phone go for
10 hours straight without going dead.

Actually, if I am not mistaken, Motorola owns the patent on Direct
Connect (a specific method of push to talk). It's much like a computer,
actually. Many companies make computer components. They have many
competitors. Intel doesn't have a patent on the microprocessor, but it
has a patent on Pentium 4 microporcessors. It's a patent on the
specific method or physical technology used.
