Not at all. The reader may be seeing a thread where the original
articles have already expired on his news server, or just plain never
    got there.

It's polite to assume that the reader needs a reminder of what's being
discussed. So, you should quote a bit and then post your response
    underneath.

It's impolite to assume that the reader has already read, or remembers,
    the original material.

If someone enters a discussion late, or is researching for old information,
they might have to suffer the minor inconvenience of scrolling down to read.

Nevertheless, it's rude--and you're promoting rudeness by insisting that
    top posting is OK.

If you wish to ignore basic netiquette, do so at your own risk.

Saying its wrong or rude might be a little strong. but posting your
replies on top of or ahead of the item your replying to is a little
    ackward to read.

So what about SPLIT posting? I certainly do it because it lends
for a more logical and comprehensible reply.

Why hasn't anyone answered this question? This is pathetic that the thread
broke off into a discussion about long distance and etiquette rather than
answer this person's question. Obtain a life.

What's even more pathetic is that you quoted this spammer's entire
message, including the long distance spam link.

Nobody's answered because everyone recognizes that people like him post
random crap solely to get his spam "business opportunity" link out to
    the world.

By top-posting, it makes it easier for me to scroll down the list of
messages. When new posts are put at the bottom, it takes more time to
move the mouse from the message list down to the actual message,
scroll thru the message, and then go back up to the message list and
    start all over again

In a polite society one's own personal preferences should not override
the preferences of the majority. On usenet the majority preference has
always been for *bottom* posting when replying to a thread. This is
called netiquette and is considered polite. Top posting is considered
selfish, ill-mannered and impolite. On Usenet it's common practice to
first quote the text you are commenting and then place your comments
below. This is done by placing ">" in front of each quoted line.

Top posting is wrong, and those who do it are being flat-out rude.

As for long distance--it's not only one penny more than what I'm paying,
it's also 25% more. That's a bunch. IN ADDITION, in case you hadn't
noticed, he was using his Usenet space and our bandwidth to promote his
own commercial interest--a serious no-no, even more serious than top
    posting.

One day, you'll grow up and move out of your parents' basement and see
    the world.
