    Hello all,

I'm new here. I hope someone can help me. Cingular customer service
seems to be of no help.

Does anyone know if Cingular has coverage in Duncan and Marlow (sp?)
Oklahoma? Is the coverage GSM or TDMA? I looked at the maps but these
areas seem to be in the "well that's hard to tell" area. (just depends
on how accurate the map is)

Any info is much appreciated, TIA
    Tallulah

Duncan and Marlow are located in Stephens county (CMA603) and as such
are covered by Western Wireless on the A-side and United States
    Cellular on the B-side (see
    http://people.ku.edu/~cinema/wireless/southwest.html). Both would
probably make very fine choices, depending on where your travels take
you more often. I wouldn't count on a PCS provider in such a rural
area and I highly doubt Cingular runs a PCS system there anyway.

Thanks for your quick response. I'm trying to help out a friend. We
both live in Louisiana. My friend frequently travels to Duncan and
Marlow. She is currently with AT&T wireless and wants to switch to
cingular nation with a GAIT phone to avoid the roaming charges. The
catch is she needs a family talk plan and cingular said she could not
have family talk with nationwide coverage. Cingular offered preferred
nation GAIT with family talk, but preferred nation means she can still
end up with roaming charges. If she buys into this plan will she be
roaming when she travels to Duncan and Marlow?

I have no idea what Preferred Nation GAIT is. As far as I know,
    there's three choices:

    1. Cingular Nation (GAIT): This plan requires a GAIT phone and gives
you ultimate coverage with no roaming charges ever, but as you have
discovered it doesn't qualify for some of the promotions, like 7 pm
nights and weekends or the FamilyTalk option.

    2. Cingular Nation GSM: Requires a GSM phone and qualifies for all
promotions, but coverage is limited (no TDMA or AMPS backup). In your
case, Duncan and Marlow MAY be able to pick up the T-Mobile GSM system
from Lawton, but I wouldn't count on it. Plus there's large patches
without coverage on the way between LA and OK (see
    http://onlinestore.cingular.com/weba..._map_11_03.htm).

    3. Preferred Nation (TDMA/AMPS): This plan gives you great coverage
including Duncan and Marlow (WWCA is a preferred roaming partner of
Cingular) and qualifies for all current promotions, but there is also
    some non-preferred roaming (see
    http://onlinestore.cingular.com/weba...ippi/PN_ms.htm).
Unfortunately, this plan is no longer offered in many markets and you
may have to twist somebody's arm to get it (it's still offered in MS
and AL). But if you can get it and don't frequently travel to the
    non-preferred roaming areas it's a great deal.

I'm working now with a company that owns a Radio Shack franchise
that markets Cingular and asked about if I provided my own phones
(Nokia 5165 as they are durable as all get out), could I get a
month-to-month plan as I would not be getting a contractual
incentive, i.e. free phone for two-year plan of discounted phone
for one-year plan. She didn't know, but agreed that I should be
abel to get such a plan...will know tomorrow.

Please, let us know. I'm wondering if it is still possible to activate a
Preferred Nation account in Oklahoma City with a GAIT phone.

The website seems to indicate you can.

The first link above showing the Nationwide calling area specifically
requires either of the 2 GAIT phones; 6340i and t62u.
I just activated the Cingular Superhome family plan in Oklahoma City,
and I got one of each of those 2 GAIT phones. It's great to finally have
a strong signal in my house, I just left T-Mobile after several years
due to loss of signal at my new house (I just moved to Mustang from OKC
3 weeks ago, and the house is situated in a low area) and I tried AT&T
GSM for 2 weeks, but cancelled that due to loss of signal at my house also.

    Re: coverage in Oklahoma?

There isnt much GSM coverage in the NW part of the state. It is extremely
spotty coverage. The same exists in the SW part as USC is Cdma and WW
coverage is not very good. Dobson hasn't deployed very many GSM sites in
their markets of the state at this time. Pioneer has deployed Cdma in their
markets as well. AWS doesnt let their GSM phones roam Tdma in alot of areas
of the state. In the future, USC will be a dominant player in OK now that
they have spectrum that covers 100% of the state.
For the Marlow/Duncan area I would go with USC and not Cingular

    My 2 cents...

    Re: coverage in Oklahoma?

Yes, roaming on USC (tdma) or Western Wireless (tdma) depending on Cingulars
PRL for that area . There are no PCS carriers deployed in that area, until
you are close to Lawton. Both carriers in this area are deploying cdma so
tdma will be a limited option in the future
