    ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. Well put Steve (maybe a wee bit agressively LOL). I have
    been amazed that so few realize this. (It will all come out in the wash)
    There some people out there are so convinced that the Carriers will be
    giving away "Round the World Trips" and "55 Inch Projection TV's " along
    with 5,000 Anytime Minutes with Free Nites & 3 Day Weekends (starting at 7pm
    as well) and FREE TREO 600's SORRY FOLKS THAT AD IS NOT COMMING!! Number
    portability is the new " Year 2000 Compatible" misjudgement, for 2003. And
    if ANYTHING, the carriers would be crazy not to sit back and watch. See what
    happens. But if you think they're gionna come out of the Gate with their
    best foot forward you are sadly mistaken. They also have the Christmas
    season upon them. They will be busy anyway. While it remains to be seen ,
    completely, stop shining up your U-Haul trailers to bring your "Swag" home
    from porting a number over, ITS NOT THERE FOR THE BRINGING. At least not
    yet.

    The deals have started already. AT&T free phone every year, SprintPCS 7 PM
    nights for $5, TMobile, free weekends include all day Friday.

    Competition will ensure the deals get better, especially as the laggards count
    customers and see they are losing (more leaving than coming).

    In the long run, Market Share counts most. You will never make money with too
    few (and declining) customers.

    Nobody has said there will not be "deals". And like I have stated, its the
    Thanksgiving Weekend comming up, the Kick Off for Christmas/Holiday Seasson,
    there would be "deals" anyway this time of year. The point that was being
    made is that the general public seems to think that some incredible
    metamorphisis of the industry (i.e. rates, equipment costs/contractual
    terms) is about to occur and that is doubtful. Of course, the industry will
    not stand still, it never has, but you were not going to go to Bed Sunday
    nite and wake up to Get a Free Phone with Car Kit and the Car to go with it,
    on Portability Monday Morning "

    I am hoping for some gutsy tactics like. We will credit your account
    for the termination fee of your other carrier if you subscribe to a
    certain level of plan where $ + more than a certain amount. Or
    something like that.

    Don't hold your breath.

    Look at it from a carrier's perspective. They spend $200-300 in acquisition
    costs grabbing any new customer (phone subsidies, dealer commissions, etc.)
    and you want them to go another $100-200 in the hole paying your ETF when
    you are demonstrating by switching, that you have no loyalty to any
    particular cell carrier!

    (I don't mean "you" personally above, but "you" as in the general public,
    wohm up to 1 in 4 switch carriers whenever they want a shiny new phone.)

    Besides, why would WNP change the "gutsy tactics"? Any carrier desparate
    enough to pay EFTs to get customers would've done it long before Nov. 24th.

    Amazingly enough, despite seeming evidence to the contrary, wireless
    carriers know more about the wireless industry than their customers, and
    they already knew WNP wasn't going to open the Gates of Hell. They fought
    it not because they feared losing customers, but because they were too cheap
    and lazy to implement the systems to handle porting. As far as they were
    concerned it was money spend that would generate no income or profit.

    Actually they did, in fact, win one of the biggies - which was portablity
    from wired phone numbers to cellular. That's probably worth a hefty number
    of subscriber upgrades (read, higher charges) for all those people who had
    held onto their wired phone out of inertia and barely used it.

    Now they'll cut the cord, do everything wireless, and go up another ten or
    twenty dollars/month (or more...) in usage.

    I don't think we've felt the full effects of LNP yet. Not a surprise
    there weren't a flood of people changing their numbers on Nov 24.
    Most people were on contracts previously; in the next year we should
    really see what effect it has. I do suspect market share will change.
    Verizon has already gained me after 3.5 years with AT&TWS (well, as
    soon as I get Verizon to port my number). At least in the Portland
    area, I've talked to numerous people who are fed up with AT&TWS.
    Their service really seems to have deteriorated here - I guess it
    depends on the area, but if they have seem similarly reduced service
    around the country, LNP will cost them even more market share.

    Here's a question to (perhaps) illustrate my point- if you didn't know WNP
    was coming, would you have stayed with AT&Ts deteriorating service just to
    keep your number?

    My guess is no- at some point you'd be so fed up you'd switch anyway, even
    with the hassle of a number change.

    So, sure, Verizon (or whoever) might pick up market share as additional
    contracts expire, but my point is they would've anyway. The switch to GSM
    has seemed to be a particular challenge for AT&T. (I think they've tried to
    rush it- Cingular's "GAIT and see" attitude seems to be working more
    smoothly.)

    Well, yes and no. I tried Verizon last summer. I like Nokia phones
    but Verizon didn't sell them in the summer. Instead, they gave me a
    cheap Motorola phone that had crappy reception in my house. Had
    it worked as well as the Nokia I just got (beautifully), I'd
    have stuck with it then. The Nokia 3589i just came out in October
    plus LNP came in November, so I thought I'd try again. I'm glad I
    waited actually - saved me the expense of getting new business cards
    printed (mine aren't cheap to get done).

    But you miss the point: it's a lot cheaper to chuck crappy cell
    service now. I can change every year if I want to. Who wants to
    change phone numbers every year? Very few.

    One other thing, a lot of people who thought that they were long out of
    contract, discovered that the carrier had lied to them and extended their
    contract. I have two relatives that were leaving AT&T for Verizon. Their
    Nokia 6000 series phones were so old that they still displayed "Cellular
    One." They made a point of not taking proferred new phones because they
    didn't want to be under contract, awaiting portability. When I called AT&T I
    discovered that they had six months left in a 1 year contract. the AT&T
    representative had added free long distance to their account at the time
    they declined the offer of a free new phone. This extended their contract by
    a year, even though they explicitly asked if this would extend their
    contract ant the rep said no. At least with Verizon, when you take a
    promotion they make it perfectly clear to you that this extends your
    contract.

    AT&T is rapidly deteriorating in the Bay Area as they apparently deactivate
    TDMA cells and switch them to 800 Mhz GSM. But AT&T GSM coverage, while
    improving, is still not nearly as good as Verizon CDMA. Sprint and Cingular
    are hopeless. Verizon is well aware of the situation, and is in no mood to
    cut prices or offer great deals.

    Even though AT&T Wireless, and AT&T are unrelated, they seem to both have
    adopted the same methods of selling service--lie, lie, lie.

    I used Sprint PCS in the Bay Area, and as of last April it was superb! I
    was using a Samsung A400 and I traveled from downtown San Francisco, SFO and
    all along the south bay area including Mountain View, Cupertino and San
    Jose. No problems, not once, not ever (excluding in building coverage in
    building in Cupertino ... no carrier worked there). I was there for six
    weeks except on the weekend, so I think I had the chance to sample the
    system in that area (oh yeah, including in Sacramento as well on the fifth
    week).

    I agree with you 100%... I think over the next 12 months we'll see
    lots of changes. Not just in folks changing carriers but in the way
    carriers do business. They no longer have the leverage of holding our
    numbers solely to themselves.

    I don't know about going up in usage. I cut the cord years ago, and I'd
    say that my usage hasn't really gone up. But then, the whole reason I
    cut the cord was because I rarely used my landline phone because all of
    my calls were on my cell, and I didn't see the need to pay for something
    I didn't really use.

    Honestly, I don't see why people would be waiting to keep their numbers
    if service was really that bad for them. If I had crappy cell phone
    service before LNP, having to change my number would NOT deter me from
    switching... if anything, I'd WANT a new number because chances are, the
    people I know would be well aware that calling my on that old number
    would be a frustrating experience. There's no logic in hanging on to a
    phone number if you can't *use* that phone number due to bad coverage or
    poor service quality. And those who argue that keeping a phone number
    is important because their contacts rely on that number are forgetting
    the fact that if those people can't *reach* you, then the number is
    worthless.

    Unless people are *really* that dumb that they stubbornly hung on for
    LNP, the only benefit I see is that it allows frugal people to search
    for a better deal while not having to advertise to their contacts that
    they'll hop onto any old carrier just to get service on the cheap.
