If your contract is fulfilled, you can get a new phone for free simply by
renewing your contract for two years.

As long as the technology is the same the answer is yes. If you do it
that way you also avoid a new/extended contract.

    Sorry,
I should have said I do not wish to get another contract. Had enough of
    them.
Can you tell me if the Nokia 5165 is TDMA and Tri-Mode? I have seen some on
    ebay.

    Thanks for any help.

You don't even have to call to activate it. Just swap the sim and go.

Bzzzzzzzt. Wrong answer. Nokia 5165 is a *TDMA* (IS-136) handset.
It has *no* SIM. Only GSM handsets have SIMs such as the Nokia 5190.

Cingular is a confused company and confused subscribers. The company
won't even admit that they are using two different incompatible
technologies. It's no wonder that its subscribers are confused.

There is no SIM in a Nokia 5165. It's a TDMA phone- not GSM- a call
will be necessary to switch ESNs.

Older Cingular TDMA phones are pretty cheap on eBay (any former
Cingular entity like SWB or BellSouth's phones will work too.) AT&T
phones will generally work as well, but Cingular is often lax about
sending new IRDBs (Intelligent Roaming DataBase) to phones after ESN
swaps, so the phone might seek AT&T roaming partners instead of
    Cingular's when roaming.

Cingular generally requires tri-mode phones on TDMA plans so a Nokia
    5160, 5165, 6160, 8260 or 8265 will be useable. Avoid 5120s, 5125s
and 6120s. (They are 800MHz-only, and no longer allowed on most
    Cingular rate plans.)

Oppsie, wasn't paying attention to model number. I have been on GSM so long,
I forget to think sometimes :-P. My apologies Dan.

I have access to just about all models of phones Cingular has offered
now and in the past. Am tending towards the 5160/6160, 3360, or 6340i
GAIT phone. Will take several phones to an area that is a known dead
zone around a lake surounded by hills and call 611 to see how they
    sound.
