    Has Cingular Wireless Billed You For "Voice Mail Deposit"?


    Hello.

    If you have cell service from Cingular Wireless, you may be getting
    billed for minutes that you haven't used. Take a moment and check your
    last few bills. If there's a call/minutes charge for "Voice Mail
    Deposit", it's bogus!

    Please, if you have this on your bill, please get in touch with me at [email protected]

    I won't try to sell you anything or put you on a mailing list. I'm just
    trying to find other Cingular Wireless customers who have been a victim
    of this billing practice.

    I have been billed for it for months. I have made, literally, dozens of
    calls to Cingular Wireless. They have *never* given me a straight answer
    (but some very creative lies!), and every supervisor claims that I'm the
    only person they've ever seen with that charge.

    I'm working with an attorney on a class action suit, because I'm sure
    I'm not the only person billed bogus minutes for "Voice Mail Deposit."

    ....one way or the other. If you've never been charged for it, let me
    know.

    The only thing you will accomplish is to make an attorney rich(er).
    Contact your state's department of consumer affairs or its equivalent.
    It's free, and it gets their attention.

    I'm happy to make my attorney richer, as I don't really need the money.

    It's about extracting a pound of flesh from Cingular Wireless for lying
    to me on the phone countless times.

    But, if no one else can back me up on the VMD issue, I'll follow your
    excellent suggestion.

    I didn't see it on my bill, but it's a pretty big bill with lots of line
    entries. Which section would it be in?

    It is listed along with your incoming, out-going and voice mail
    retrieval calls.

    Instead of a city, state or "voice mail retrieval," it says "Voice Mail
    Deposit". In my case, it has my home phone number (who knows why) and
    calls as long as 7 or 8 minutes (it was amusing to hear CW claim that
    the charge was for people leaving messages, and then have me counter
    that I've never gotten an 8 minute message!)

    It's just a way for them to steal minutes from you!

    Perhaps "Voice Mail Deposit" is the opposite of "Voice Mail Retrieval?" Of
    course, this shouldn't use any of your minutes, since leaving voice mail uses no
    airtime. As you note, this is just a sleazy way for them to soak up your
    minutes.

    What state are you in. If is my state then I can look at my bill too.
    To call Vm and get your messages does use airtime but not leaving
    messages is the way I understand it.

    I had to reply to this post because I work for cingular wireless and I
    want to clarify the VM deposit issue. I work in customer service using
    the CARE billing system for the east coast. First off if you have a TDMA
    phone that is prepaid then the charge for caller dep a message on your
    VM is valid. However if you are a postpaid customer then the charges for
    VM dep is a known billing issue in our system and my suggestion to you
    is to call into customer service to receive a credit on the minutes used
    for the VM dep calls. This was an issue several months ago. I have not
    come accross any accounts that have this issue lately though. FYI

    I've got a postpaid account, I've been calling for months getting the
    refunds and I'm tired of doing it.

    I'm sure that's what Cingular Wireless is counting on, but I've got
    other legal remedies in mind.

    I'm not sure if it's the same as "VMD" but my Nov-Dec 2003 was the first
    bill in the prior six months in which Cingular has _not_ charged me "Toll
    Charge" for calling Voice Mail. Brief history is that I moved from CA to FL
    and am now roaming on T-Mobile/VoiceStream...not sure if that causes this
    issue.

    It's a small sum (even over the entire bill and even over the 6 months), but
    still I had to call each time I was about to pay the bill and have you
    reverse it. Each time I was told "this should not happen again."
