My contract with NEXTEL expires in January and am considering
switching to another provider. One that I am looking at is Cingular.
Can anyone give me their 2 cents worth on them and which would be the
best phone to get if I do switch. Not interested in camera, etc.
Mainly good reception and hopefully a handsfree option.

Re: Should I switch from NEXTEL to Cingular?
I just switched to Cingular and have great coverage with my 2 GAIT phones,
Nokia 6340i and SonyEricsson T62u. Had to switch because I moved and
T-Mobile and AT&T didn't work at my new house. The Nokia works slightly
better than the SonyEricsson in my opinion.

If you do switch to Cingular, two of their best recieving GSM phones right
now (really three) are the LG 4050, and the Samsung S307/X427. You will
likely get a bit better coverage from the aforementioned Gait phones though.

I like the Siemens S56... inexpensive, supports bluetooth, decent screen
and has a speaker phone. It's small, which I like, about the same size
as a folded flip-phone. The other good feature for me is no camera!
Which is why I chose it over the SE T616 or Nokia 3650. It also has a
voice recorder, as you can tell I'm pleased with it.
I purchased a cheap bluetooth headset $30 and am happy to be handsfree
untethered. If you get a PDA that supports bluetooth it's possible to
access the internet. Bluetooth also allows you to sync contact calendar
information with your PC or PDA.

I regret going to Cingular. AM riding out contract and will change. Customer
service is not the best

Re: Should I switch from NEXTEL to Cingular?
I don't know if you're from New England, but Cingular's GSM network just
scored highest in the latest 3rd-party network analysis, in most of
Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
In my experience the audio clarity with their GSM system is excellent.
Handsets? The Siemens handsets are good. I've also used the Samsung S307
with very good performance. The Motorola V400 is supposed to be excellent,
plus it has a built-in 4x zoom camera - pretty cool.

ANY comparison with the poor sound quality of NEXTEL must be deemed excellent.
Walkie talkies simply don't have the sound quality that most phones have.

Re: Should I switch from NEXTEL to Cingular?
I wouldn't switch to cingular from anything. My T-Mo contract was up
recently, and I considered Cingular briefly (FastForward option was
attractive) -- the experience with their sales staff (waiting in an EMPTY
store for at least 10 minutes) and the poor answers I received led me to
renew my T-Mo contract. I've also asked elsewhere about advice, and the low
grades for cingular customer service seem to be universal
