If the ReplayTV has an additional serial port for an external modem, you
    might have a chance...

Why does it need a serial port? Anton is not using the cell phone as a modem...just as a phone line. I've been looking for the same sort of thing (for a different reason), but no dice. Why doesn't this exist? A mobile phone without any modem or internet capabilites can open a connection to any other telecom device. Why can't you just use the mobile as a conduit? Can anyone explain this to me?

If you want a terrestrial-line modem to communicate through your mobile
phone, the phone's audio channel would have to resemble the audio
channel of a terrestrial line. In digital mobile phones, the audio is
compressed using techniques that are designed for replicating voice.
This compression does so much damage to the very complex audio output by
a modem, that what comes out at the other end is mostly incomprehensible
    to the receiving modem.
